CTD while browsing large inventory

I have been having this problem ever since I picked up playing the Special Edition again. whenever I browse an inventory that is not my own and that has more items in a tab than fit on a single page I risk CTDing while either scrolling, looting or moving things to/from it. this happens everywhere I can open an inventory (follower, container). this never happens when I trade or when I browse my own inventory. I've tried following some other threads with similar issues but all report CTDs on entering an inventory, not while browsing.
