dogwithrabiez
After installing a few mods, the voices to every single character in the game disappeared. Does anyone know why this happened? Varus Torvyn
Aside from your problem, I'm surprised you don't have the Unofficial Patches installed. Since you don't have any DLCs nor SI on your list, you would still want to install the Unofficial Oblivion Patch. It repairs 1,600 bugs left over after 1.2.0416. For your question, see if your original files still exist. C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Data\Sound\voice\Oblivion.esm
dogwithrabiez
That's the weird thing. I didn't used to have it, so I used BSA commander to unpack the files and put it back. Now, I have C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data\Sound\voice\Oblivion.esm, and the other files(Argonian, Dremora, High elf, etc, etc), but it just doesn't play. Any suggestions? EDIT: Though, when I look through the files, I notice some of the normal sounds are of a MP3 file, and some are .lip. Also, there's a BSA file which states 'voices' and 'voices 2', but it apparently doesn't use them. EDIT 2: Well, I'm trying unpacking the voices files again. Apparently, the file got corrupted or stopped or... Something, anyway, during unpacking, which is why it didn't work. Hopefully it works this time, thanks for your help. EDIT 3: Aaaannnndddd it didn't work. My brother's Oblivion, which is vanilla, has only the BSA files, and it works fine. No sound file in the data folder at all, actually. Any ideas to why this is happening?

I think that's the problem, actually, maybe I'm not understanding though. ***you don't know how tempted I was to ask "They're not in your head?"***
dogwithrabiez
I did uninstall and re-install Oblivion. It's still not working. I also took out the sound file, and left the BSAs in, but it still refuses to work. I mean, I guess I could go delete everything, and re-do every mod, but that'd chew up another 5 hours of my life. :(

Also, if you left any files in the original directory, at all, that could be part of the problem, I mean if there's still a folder called "C:/program files/Bethesda..." than maybe the ini file still thinks it's a valid directory? If you save your data folder some place safe, and then use the DVD installer, and then place the saved Data folder into the new Oblivion directory that might help because all the pointers will be right. dogwithrabiez
Well, um, no. The original problem was after I installed all the mods, and as an attempt to fix the problem, I re-installed. In hindsight, I should've installed one mod, tested, and another, test, but that would've taken even more time.

Mods will normally put their voice files into the Data/Sound directory, unless they come with a BSA file, so I'm just trying to wrap my head around why a mod would cause you to lose your sound, unless it was something OOO or another makeover mod. At any rate, you did make sure your audio is "on", right?
dogwithrabiez
Yeah, every other sound works, it's just the voices. I'm not sure why the voices aren't there either, since the BSA files are intact, and the sounds go into a completely different folder.

I'm not sure why the voices aren't there either, since the BSA files are intact, and the sounds go into a completely different folder. Just saw this on another site: Yes, I managed to figure out how it works. Vanilla oblivion loads and decompresses the .bsa files for the game, including the voice ones; however, when a sound\voice\Mod_name.esp folder exists in the data folder, this is loaded before the bsa files, and overrides them given that the "decompressed" files are the same as those in the bsa. If they are not, they are loaded, and then the bsa ones are loaded as well. But... if you don't have the english version of oblivion, it happens that your bsa voice files have a folder tree containing the names of the races in the language of the translation (italian, in my case). For some reason, when you have a mod in another language (commonly in english), and of course the names of the races are in english, oblivion loads those files and then refuses to load the bsa voice files because it doesn't recognise the localized names of the races... What I had to do was to decompress all the bsa voice files and change the name of the folders to their english name, so that they are loaded from Data\Sound\Voice and not from the bsa. Maybe some kind of clue or breadcrumb trail here?
