Make me think its worth it

Great thread! The game is on it's way from amazon.com as I type and I'll soon be installing and researching mods (and doing everything I can to minimize the effects of Steam on my life). I haven't played a TES game since Morrowind, but still remember how much fun I had with mods in that one. So, please keep the suggestions coming. I assume I can figure out SKSE, NMM and BOSS myself. I've got an i7-3930K @ 3.2 GHz, 16 GB of RAM and a GTX 580 with 3 GB, so I hope I can handle most mods. Many thanks for the suggestions!

you need to read. an hour of reading would save you days of frustration

you need to look at your skyrim folder without ANY mods in it. you need to see what is there so you know what to remove later (if necessary, most mods uninstall completely via NMM) because right now you're doing it wrong and expecting positive results and that just never happens

people who refuse to do their research so they know what they're doing are running modders off from this scene. you really shouldn't touch a mod at all until you know the simple stuff like what the subfolders are all for, what core files are, what the .ini templates are, and what you need to do to "start fresh" because deleting everything and redownloading isn't it

you should never have to redownload the game. the main files aren't altered in any way by modding and are 95% of what you download. they can't be accidentally altered in any way

the stuff in the folders inside your skyrim folder can be deleted and redownloaded in 2-5 mins. that's the stuff you can get rid of if you're wanting a fresh install.

right now you are your own worst enemy. skyrim with mods is 100% worth it.

Along with the previous menu suggestions I recommend Catagorized Favorites Menu and a small but very nice Mod EZ2C Dialogue Menu because the vanilla dialogue menu is hard to read.

If your gonna use horses there is Better Horses, I haven't had any conflict issues with it. I also use Horses for Followers without issue.

I really like EDWS Enhanced Dynamic Weather System. Like Frostfall it adds some realism that Bethesda left out.

If your like everyone else and hate or are confused by the calendar system in Skyrim Then get Modern Day Calendar Names.

Sounds like you like combat, get The Dance of Death - a killmove Mod. Verified today that it works just fine with 1.6. Be aware: Animation mods have been reporting conflicts with 1.6 so be sure to check the Mod page and comments carefully before using any of these. The authors will get that resolved in no time, if not already, just check before activating.

Most Armour and weapons Mods are pretty safe. Except some of the real HD intensive ones. Some tend to slow down weapon draws. But again that depends on your system.

Skyrim has a Save Game issue. It is recommended that you DON'T use autosaves. But I can't stress enough to save, save, save! If you ever have to go back to a previous save but don't know what your Mod build was then use SavegameScanner. You can download it in the utilities catagory in the Mods listing. It will scan your save and tell you Mods, versions and Mod order at the time of that save. When you experiment with a Mod but it is problematic you might want to go back to the save before you activated it as some Mods leave stuff in the save game. It can cause big problems. A good practice is to make a clean save prior to using the Mod, that way you don't lose a lot of game play.

@Elfriend you indicated that you have an Nvidia card. I highly recommend http://www.geforce.c...de?sf2686171=1/

@k357 recommend you check out the same tweak guide as most of it can be applied on other cards as well.

I know I already stressed some of this in my earlier post but I just want to get behind this post as it is well stated! Some time invested on your part makes the whole Modding scene better. Kudos to you greysinsanderson!

DO NOT USE BETTER HORSES

it's a dead mod right now and completely inferior in every way to CONVENIENT HORSES. that + UFO will take care of your horse + follower's horses needs and even plays well with horse armor mods

better horses just hasn't been updated in months and while it still does what it was meant to do, it's just outdated and if you use UFO, 5 followers trying to ride from point A to point B is an unmitigated disaster. convenient horses just has more options and everything i could think of was included and i love it. really an underrated mod

i recently made the swap and there is no reason whatsoever to use better horses ever again. convenient horses does everything better and on top of that, does more.

also i sent you a PM with a list of basic but game-changing mods. if you'll tell me your computer specs i can get you some custom .ini files made so you can avoid having to spend days playing with settings

@k357 and elfriend

I respectfully disagree with this post as a point in case. Each recommendation you ask for is going to be influenced by personal choice and desire of the player and validated as per the system they use.

Better Horses is not DEAD. It is still up on the Nexus. In fact it currently has 745 endorsements as compared to 266 for Convenient Horses. (Number 745 having posted just as I did a quick review prior to this post) Does this mean it is better or worse? That should be up to you to decide. If you read the comments on the Mod pages for both Mods you will see that there are plenty of issues concerning both Mods. For my style of play Better Horses is perfect. Plus it functions perfectly. Convenient Horses does indeed offer more functions and options.

My rule for Mods is that they function in the game without CTD's and are compatible with the other Mods I choose to use. When I am hundreds of hours into a playthrough I try not to look for greener grass all the time. Which is why you should take your time and do your homework and testing now when you are building your game for play. That way you will avoid messing with it right in the middle of a playthrough.

@greysinsanderson

Just so ya know I agree that Convenient Horses is better than Better Horses in regards to options. I don't know why LtMattmoo is off the scene right now (his business). His Mod is great work, is not 'dead' and deserves the respect it has earned.

If you think I'm hijacking your thread, k357, please tell me so. It's just that, as an (almost) new owner of the game I'm anxious to get started and this is exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. greysinsanderson, your pointed advice is on the mark. No one should try to mod a game until they understand how it works. I'm coming here from Neverwinter Nights 2, where a "mod" is a module (independent game constructed with the toolkit) and what you call mods are "haks", or modifications of the game itself. My last experience with TES was Morrowind, where I think mods were called plugins, so I'll proceed carefully.

Glhadiator, stained716 and all who have posted to this thread, thank you. You'll surely hear beginner's questions from me again. Monday...

Nah dude It's not my thread im just the OP, talk about whatever you want :P

Was playing last night with most of the recommended graphics mods and the UI one.

Gotta say, improved tenfold over the console version, anti aliasing alone was nice but this is just awesome.

I may have solved my own problem with the combat.... as if by, hmm. MAGIC :D

I'll take a look at some of the more gameplay oriented ones today.
