Setting up a different audio-subtitle combination

Hi guys,

I need your help. I'm planning to play the FNV Ultimate Ed., but using a different subtitle (italian) to go with the english audio dialogs. I was thinking to copy all the necessary eng audio files (taken from an eng installation of the game) and past them in an italian one (overwriting the ita audio dialogs files here). The thing is I'm not sure what files do I need from the "Data" folder...

Can someone help me with this? Thanks.

I haven't had to do this myself, but it's something we should document so ... I did some research. The process is known as "localization" and is described for Steam developers here.

Going by similar instructions for other games, you want to install the game for the language you want the Audio to be voiced in (i.e. English in your case). (This is to preserve any filename differences that might get confused if you try to just copy audio files.) But first, assuming you have installed the game for your native language, find the "Fallout_default.INI" file: "[General]" section, "sLanguage=" entry, and note the exact language name used. (Not sure if that is the same name as Steam used when you select the "language" version of the game, but that entry is the easiest and intended method of changing subtitles.)

Edit: See also 'Issue: Regional Non-English language version of the game displaying English dialogue' in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" article before downloading the English version. You will also want to copy the "<DLC>_lang.nam" files beforehand.

The official Steam instructions for installing a different language version are here. Then in the three INI files (see the 'Game INI files' section of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article), find the "[General]" section entry "sLanguage=ENGLISH" and change the value to that of your desired subtitle language.

I would appreciate you reporting with whatever works for you.

OK. I think I figured it out. I copied all the italian .esm and .nam files from the "Data" folder of the italian installation in the english one replacing the respectives .esm and .nam english files. Then I edited the three .ini files replacing "ENGLISH" with "ITALIAN" in "sLanguage=ENGLISH".

I'm just at the beginning of the game, though, so I can't be certain this is 100% correct. But from the look of it, it appears so.

Good to hear you worked it out. Thanks for reporting back on the results. Do let us know if you encounter any issues later on.

I'm a little surprised that you needed to copy ESM files. (I would have thought of the BSA files as a possibility.) Did you determine that was necessary, or did you just decide to do it as a precaution? Was that all the vanilla and DLC ESM files, or only certain ones?

Vanilla and DLCs. All the .esm and .nam files in the "Data" folder.

For the .esm (ita) files, well, I looked at some of them with notepad++ and saw that some text (in-game text apparently) was in italian, so I thought should have been included.
