Making "paintings" should be way easier than rigging meshes and making armor and other complex meshes. A small square mesh(which is only going to have 6 sides/faces, if you want it thick, or double side a flat plane if you don't.), don't have bother too much with textures if all one cares about is just those pictures, then it'd just be a simple diffuse map, with the image placed onto it. Best part, the UV map would be stupid-easy to generate.

 

I'm almost tempted to do it :tongue:.

That would be super easy to do if you don't mind the naming convention being a bit weird.

 

You can use the material swapping and just save the file in the same format as other pictures and it should automatically finds it as an additional option for the swaps, assuming you've followed the naming convention perfectly :)
