How hard is it to create custom weapons?

Ah, custom weapons are harder than it seemed. I may just stick to re-texturing until I can learn more.

But if anyone can tell me the way in which I can make a hole/gap in the middle of a sword then that is the sort of stuff I wished to do. Not full blown moddeling just yet.
