Contact with Users Who No Longer Logon - Mod Asset Requests

Alright, so firstly let me make it absolutely clear I will not and do not use assets from other modders without permission from them. There. Just wanted to say that before I get started so I don't get a ton of messages warning me. lol.

OK, now that's out of the way, my question is regarding inspiration and assets other modders use. There's a few that I've looked at and wanted to either fix (like some followers to make a combo file or sorts and possible add quests to make it more like actual followers in the game) or other stuff like modifying a tattoo for certain race, etc. Sometimes it's even just looking at a mod and getting inspiration to do something similar but about 50% different

My issue is that some of the modders who I have tried to contact haven't read their messages or anything. The other thing I noticed is that the majority of them, if not all, haven't logged on to Nexus in years. And this is a morbid thought, but what if some of them have become incapacitated or something (you know what I'm saying)... how would anyone even know?

So that being said, I was wondering is there another way to reach out to these modders? Is there some kind of time limit like with patents on assets where they can be used and if the modder has an objection they can request it's removal, etc?

Especially since they are shared here. I just think it would be a shame not to share some really good ideas/mods with the community and wondered if others have these same questions.

Thanks

No unfortunately there is no time limit as far as Nexus is concerned unless the mod author has written a time limit on their page . I have in fact had this issue with a mod author who is dead and I asked Nexus admin, the answer was the rules still apply.

Inspiration is a slightly different thing; its a more difficult call, ask Nexus admin if you are unsure.

Some of the other mods just list the mods whose assets they need as requirements.

For example you want to give a certain follower mod a quest, but can't contact the author. Make your mod as an add-on, meaning you still need the original mod installed and you're just giving it a quest. AFAIK you don't need permission for that because you aren't actually using assets used by the original author and calling it your own. You're just a value pack, kind of like a DLC.

That's a great idea. I never thought of that actually.

Some of the mods are broken as well so I fixed them. So if I made a mod with the fixes to their assets, listed all the mods that are required, as well as give all the mod authors credit, that would still count, right?

You'd have to clarify with the admins. But as I understand it, as long as you are not using the original mod's contents, and is just basically using a plugin to overwrite some stuff and add some stuff to the original mod to put your fixes, it's okay. But before publishing I'd advise to clarify with the admins. You're not actually making a mod anyway. You're basically making bug fixes for somebody else's mod. I've seen other people just upload their own bugfixes and patches so I believe this should fall into that category.

Yes that is what I did with the deceased author's mod and it is perfectly acceptable and done by many patch mods. As long as your mod requires the original mod to be downloaded then you may do what you like in your 'patch'.
