What could have messed up my installation?

Recommended Posts

The mods I use are by no means a stable combination, but just recently Oblivion seemed to stop working for seemingly no reason at all and I have to admit I am utterly baffled as to what could have messed it up.

I had just installed Deadly Reflex, SDR, and HUD Status Bars with Skyrim compass. This is on an fcom installation if that matters. So I started up my game and everything worked fine... but I noticed the HUD bars for primary basic needs overlapped with the Skyrim Compass. So I decided I'd just remove the Skyrim compass files from Oblivion/Data/ini, since I didn't care for it that much anyway.

And then when I tried to start up Oblivion again, it crashed on startup. I tried two more times and it crashed again. Then I tried a thousand things such as deleting my Oblivion.ini file, deactivating mods one by one, deleting obse files, and even reinstalling the Skyrim Compass. Yet nothing worked.

Since I have absolutely no idea how to fix this I'm going to just reinstall Oblivion... but can anyone tell me what on Earth happened? I understand using so many mods in conjunction with Fcom is probably pretty unstable, but how could removing such an insignificant file cause such a big problem?

Wait, you did what, precisely?

The Skyrim Compass option for HUD Status bars installed files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Oblivion\Data\menus\prefabs\HUDstatusBars. I decided I didn't want the Skyrim Compass addition though, so I deleted the prefabs folder from menus.

I said data/ini for some reason, but after checking it looks like that was what I deleted.

Ok, first of all, move Steam and Oblivion out of Program Files, instructions here.

Second, reinstall HUD Status Bars, then turn off the compass in the HSB INI.

I feel for you.

I have been rebuilding my Oblivion on a computer with Vista.

At first it worked fine, then boom. Crash city. :verymad: :wallbash:

So I followed all the advice I could get on-line. ( Thanks everyone! )

I ended up doing a total uninstall and cleaned up my registry, defragged my hard drive and then set about doing another re-install. :whistling:

The game should be put OUTSIDE of your program files.

Somewhere like C:Games\Oblivion

Do follow the advice Nephenee13 gives.

I am almost done with my new, stable, improved Oblivion2.1.

Hope it goes well.

Oh, yeah.

Do not move straight to a reinstall.

Try reverting to Vanilla Oblivion first and see if it still crashes.

If it does you need to start the uninstall / reinstall procedure.
