Samurai kimonos and armours

Hi! I'm new to the Skyrim modding community, but I've been playing around with textures for the Blades armour and robes to try and allow characters to have a more samurai look. It's a mod I've done for myself, but maybe others around here would be interested...

For the armour, I added lacing and more metal plates to the thigh and hip to hopefully be reminiscant of classic samurai armour. The normal map has also been redone to give the plates a bit of a shiny, lacquered appearance.

The first one I've done has a black and gold scheme. The helmet shape in the shots is a seperate mod by Fuwada Zyuu, but the texture of course works with the default helmet.

For a kimono, I took the robe model and retextured that. There are parts of the model that make it a bit less than ideal, but I'm not a modeler so I just have to live with it. :) The normal map has been redone for this as well. The tabi (socks) and sandles are retextured shoes and are separate equipable items. I put small white mon or family crests on the chest, arms and back.

For both the armour and kimono I plan on doing several other colour schemes, and patterns in the kimono case. If people have requests that are pretty easy to do I can try to accomidate.

I'm not super familiar yet with Skyrim lore, but I believe the Blades and Akaviri had a somewhat samurai motif, so I want to make these as lore friendly as possible. I'm open to suggestions on the best way to do that. At one point I think I saw a Blades emblem, and if I can find that again maybe I can add that to the kimono in place of the current crests.

You said that this is the first one that you've done, do you plan on trying out other color schemes? Regardless, the armor looks awesome! Reason I ask, obviously think of the The Last Samurai, all the different kind of armor themes in that movie and of course the armor Tom Cruise gets, the red samurai armor, would be cool to see it if you were playing around with colors!

Yeah, for the armour I intend to do a few recolours at least, red being one of them. As I did the textures in GIMP I created seperate layers such that it will be easy to quickly recolour certain parts like the lacing and armour plates. Same with the kimono textures. I'll do up a red armour next and post it here. Edited by 0Prime0

Both look very much lore-conform, if anyone asks me. The previous games had a whole range of Japanese weapons, including, katana, wakizashi, tanto, and odachi (although it called it a "daikatana".) And various armours were heavily Japanese themed, even if they weren't called "Akavir".

E.g., here's the "orcish armor" from Morrowind:

Of course, if anyone really asks me, well, who cares? Just do what YOU want in your game or feel like doing. If an armour looks ok to you, that's that. Whoever has a lore problem with your mods, isn't forced to download them. And if anyone feels like having a tantrum anyway, far as I'm concerned, they can go screw themselves :P

Edit: Also bear in mind that the history of the Empire, and at that of Akavir too, spans thousands of years. Kodlak in Skyrim mentions at one point that the companions are 5000 years old too. Armour and weapon styles change a lot in that kind of time. Humanity went from stone weapons to firearms and knights in Gothic plate in that kind of time frame. And even in Japan, armour styles and construction evolved a lot within just hundreds of years. Plus, it wasn't mass produced, so each smith did things a little differently. If yours isn't exactly matching some other armour from TES, it's probably just normal for the period of the game.

That's a good point, Moraelin, thanks. Luckily, there aren't long descriptions attached to each item, so really it is just names, which is easy enough. I'm not too anal about lore myself, but I'd like to be accomidating.

These should all work with females as well, at least if nifskope is any indication. And if I have done things right they should work with any character. I've only tested it on male humans so far but I've setup the models.

I took a stab at a set of red armour. Didn't have a chance to do the helmet yet.

Hey that looks great! My only gripe about the akaviri stuff is that the armor has some really low poly stuff on the shoulders. Would be nice to see some custom models that look like old japanese samurai armors of various types. Some of them had scary looking masks some did not etc.

I end up wearing one of the dragon priest masks and the ebony mail with akaviri gloves and boots at some point when trying be an assasin on my own not part of the brotherhood or anything but the boots clip through the mail a lot and they make my feet look too small. Would be nice to see some slightly bigger feet for the boots if possible but not as big as that pic of the orc lol those are some biiiiiiiiiig feet hehe (insert joke about big feet means other things are big here) so if you are good at modelling it will go a long way with making the akaviri stuff better.

Hey could you try some chrome or steel looking armor too? Others have done it on this site but it doesn't look good looks too loud or plain.
