Leandro63
So I just started playing Skyrim again, and installed the latest patch, now before the patch I use to be able to run Skyrim on Ultra High with no COMPUTER CRASHES not CTD COMPUTER CRASHES. Now that I have the latest patch if I run Skyrim on medium or higher it will Crash my whole computer in the Helgean Keep. Any help would be awesome! InsanityOnABun
Crash your whole computer? As in, blue screening? I'd check if your drivers are up to date, and if you're OC'ed, you might be unstable.
Leandro63
No my PC just shuts down, this has never happen with earlier versions. Oh and the reason I want to stay updated is for mods/and for Bethesda DLC.

Check your RAM with memtest, run a full chkdsk, monitor temps of your CPU and GPU while in-game. Power supply could also be dying.

Rennn
No, it's not necessarily a hardware problem. My brother's PC started to shut down randomly with the 1.3 Skyrim patch. It only happened while playing Skyrim, and never on another game, even though he played more stressful games than Skyrim. With the next patch after 1.3, his PC never shut down on its own again. At first I was sure his PSU was dying, but it was a new PSU, and it turned out to be fine. The same with his RAM. It surprised me that a game could shut down your PC with a bug, but clearly Skyrim's patches are to blame in some cases.

There are only two ways I can think of that it could possibly do that: the first being overheating, which is more attributed to inadequate cooling than the game, and the second being Skyrim causing a driver to crash which, at the most extreme, should only cause the system to completely lock up. AFAIK, graphics and audio driver crashes can't cause a system to spontaneously shut down.
Rennn
I know, it sounds crazy. I was sure that my brother was mis-diagnosing something, and I checked everything from his PSU to his CPU speed and temperature, and just about everything in between. That 1.3 patch caused it somehow for him, either that or it's an incredible coincidence, so it's plausible that it could happen with another patch for someone else. I don't know how software can have that much control. Idk. It's still probably a hardware problem, but if all the hardware checks out alright and it never happens in any other game... Don't necessarily buy a new PSU before the next Skyrim patch. Edited July 2, 2012 by Rennn
bben46
Anything that pulls the 5 volts low will shut you down. This is how the reset button works, it shorts the +5Volts DC to ground causing the power supply to shut down, then when the button is released, it resets and reboots. This is typically some PC component - as everything uses the +5 volts it can be anything. Try a stress test program to see if you can actually eliminate the hardware. It may be possible for software to shut you down, but it is highly unlikely. If that was caused by the latest patch we would be seeing reports. - We are not seeing any reports on this. The game reports we do see a lot are: CTD - you suddenly find yourself looking at your desktop with no warning. Freezing - sound may keep playing. Black screen - caused by Nvidia card driver problem - again sound may keep playing. and a few others.
