fallout 3 (w/ all DLCs, plus 1.7patch) with voices, BUT NO OTHER SOUND

apologies if this problem has been addressed before, but i'm new to this forum, and i'm really very desperate and i don't know where to go to anymore but here.

i installed fallout3, then the 1.7 patch, then all DLCs, but when i started playing it, all i could hear were the voices of the NPCs. this became apparent early on, when in the birth scene, there was no sound effect at all for 'coming out' of your mother's womb, followed by your dad talking to you normally, but with no other sound effects like medical equipment beeping.

NO SOUND EFFECTS AT ALL for footsteps, opening/closing doors, hitting things w/ melee weapons, shooting things (this is particularly annoying, because shooting things is completely un-enjoyable without sound) etc.. no audio for EVERYTHING but the voices of the various characters in the game.

i'm aware that some people are getting the exact opposite problem i'm getting, which is NOT getting voice audio and having everything else normal. maybe this is why i haven't found a single topic or previous fix for my problem.

i've tried everything, including uninstalling/reinstalling the game, trying out JUST fallout3 without anything (still the same), then progressively adding the patch, then the dlcs, and testing each case, and all of them have the same problem.

i'm just so fed up right now because i've been trying to fix this issue for five days now, scouring the net immediately after work, and trying out every possible solution i could find. maybe it's because i'm not computer literate enough, and that's exactly why i'm calling out for help in this forum, because i know for a fact that if there's someone out there who has a possible fix, it's some mod user/maker from fallout 3 nexus, who knows fallout3 inside-out.

finally, here are my specs:

i5 processor

nvidia 310M

4Gb ram

windows 7 64-bit

realtek HD audio driver (this one i suspect is the culprit, since i can't alter the 'stereo' setting as it's been greyed out, and i can't do anything with it. one fix involves getting the 'stereo' option to 2.1 [whatever that is], but i either don't have 2.1 [the realtek HD audio manager has the 'stereo' greyed as i said, i can't even click it so i don't know for sure] or i have it and i just don't know how to make it work)

also, i currently have Skyrim in my PC, and i can play it without issue at all. i've also played and finished Fallout New Vegas, with all DLCs, without issue before, but i already uninstalled it about 6 months ago.

PLEASE, help.

i thank everyone in advance.

I feel your pain, I spent days myself searching every possible link for a solution, and your problem is definately unique. With the help of this forum I found a solution, that "May?" apply/help your situation ... Try these Sound Codec Packs ...

1) K-Lite_Codec_Pack_880_Mega.exe

2) K-Lite_Codec_Pack_64bit_630.exe

3) klcp_update_885_20120522.exe

If you want more details go to THIS LINK

hey TCat, thanks so much for your reply! i would be someone out here who would care enough to try to help me in some way, so again THANK YOU!

my Fallout 3 still wouldn't work though, even with those codecs installed. it's been several days' worth of stressing out spread over two weeks, and i think it's just time to stop and give up.

THANK YOU AGAIN!!! :)

one thing , put the hammer down and slowly back away from the pc !

no mention of steam so its a disc version then ! well if that's the case its sounds like your game hasn't unpacked correctly , could be due to damaged disc or optical drive ! or the wrong type of drive ie trying to install from a dvd using a cd drive it will read some files but not all ( check what cd/dvd player is in your machine )

then there is the fact that FO3 is INCOMPATIBLE with windows 7 ( use of compatibility mode is MS's answer ) both bethesda and microsoft say so .
