Skyrim crashes on main menu with mods

Ok so I'm really new but I've played Skyrim a lot before and everything's been fine, so today i decided to give modding a try, i installed the manager and downloaded a couple of mods. But when i turn the mods on my game crashed just as it shows the main menu. I've looked up ways to fix it and I've tried the sound method but that didn't work, I've tried all the ways suggested and it wont work. It only works when i have no mods activated, even with one activated it won't work. Any suggestions? Please and thank you!

ugh I am having the exact same problem and it sucks. I didn't realize if i have no mods running that it works, but just like the OP, if I disable all mods, the game works, but I could not play my previous game, I had to start a brand new game (probably because my previous save was using about 100+ mods). However upon doing this I noticed that the skyrim.esm aswell as update.esm are not in the list of mods. So I guess the connection I'm making is that the game only registers these esms if nothing else is there, but the second another mod is activated it is loaded before these, causing CTDs on game startup. I'm certainly no wizard at this stuff, so maybe bethesda patched the game so that these don't show up in the list anymore since people were screwing with these 2 esm load orders. IF someone can please help, it would be very appreciated, I basically just revamped my entire skyrim and wwant to play with all my sweet new addons!

Edit:Just wanted to note I've got over 500 hours in skyrim play time, a lot of which was modded. It just randomly stopped working after I had downloaded a few different things such as 2k texture, game boost, but these were working fine, things didn't get screwy until I downloaded skyboost and since then its just been CTDville.

Edit V2:Okay so I deleted the skyrim.esm and update.esm, let steam download them again, and now I can setup mods and run the game. However, when I go to start a new game, the game doesn't freeze or crash, the menus disappear, but the new game never actually starts up..This has to be the most confusing thing I've ever encountered. Hopefully this is narrowing it down some. Trying to load previous saves still results in CTD. I really don't care about starting over again, but I do want to be able to use my mods obviously. So if anyone has a solution, me and I'm sure the OP would really friggin appreciate the help.

I was looking at that mod earlier... I didn't think it had been updated for the latest patch. Maybe that's the problem?

I got rid of it once I saw it wasn't, deleted the associated files, but ugh, nothing works now, except a completely unmodded skyrim and I want to play that about as much as I want to go bust out a sega genesis. I'd probably be more apt to play the genesis. Feel like I spend more time screwing with making skyrim fun and fresh than I do actually playing the damn game.

Strangely, I'm having this problem as well. My game was fine with 110 plug ins, then I decided to run boss and tried to reset achieve invalidation. Now the game crashes whenever I get to the main menu. Edited by SeraVerte

Okay so the solution to this, you need to turn off all plugins! Then, about ten at a time plugins at a time, load your game up, I.E put on 10 plugins, load game, see if it will load the main screen, close game, load another 10 (if you notice that things get wonky, uncheck the previous ten, because one of them just caused a conflict). Do this until all your plugins are active again. Then, try to load your old save file, it may be corrupted. So you may have to start a new one. I found this issue basically started because of too much mucking around with mods, load orders, and adding new mods, once you have over 100 plugins I imagine it becomes a bit hectic on the game. Sadly I have found myself screwing around with mods and getting them all working, more than I actually play the game =P so, find the ones that work, and the ones you must have, and then leave it alone, because constantly adding, removing and changing mods seems to just be a pain in the @$$

  • 3 years later...

I only had 11 mods including the memory extenders and the game gets right to the load screen then shuts down to the desktop now I just use the command console it sucks because the game is so vanilla of course it could just be windows 10

maybe I should try modding fallout 4 see if that is any better?

I have a similar problem.

I can start a new game and everything works. I can save games and load them.

However as soon as I leave the game (ooccasionallyI need to do some real life stuff :)) I have the problem you're describing.

Loading a save from main menu will result in CTD even though that same game (I checked) was working fine before I exited the game.

Here's my experience:

1) A save game has more chances of loading if it was made indoors.

Try loading one of the indoor save games. Either automatic ones or even older ones (doesn't matter if from different playthroughs)

If that works give it a few seconds so that everything completes loading. The once you're actually "playing" load the actual save you wanted to load.

2) Start a new game...

This seems to always work.

You start a new game, let the intro run its course (and watch the mods load).

As soon as the game enables the "load" option (tends to be a few seconds before you are supposed to make your character) try to load the game you wanted.
