Items created in Mod A not "staying" in Mod B (even in CK when

First of all, thanks for reading - I hope some of this makes sense since I have thoroughly confused myself by now.. ;) I tried Googling & reading the tutorials but couldn't find an answer.

I'm not that experienced - I've modded houses since Morrowind, but I don't deal well with "complicated" things like scripting and knowing what all that tab info really means. So I may easily have missed setting something obvious. :P

I decided to save myself some time & make a Resources mod, so I can find certain furniture easily (I don't find all the categories easy to navigate). Recently I found a modder's resource with a bunch of decor .nifs (yep, http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/16525#content). So I also made new items, mostly by copying an existing similar item - for example, BookOpen, just changing the worldart .nif from some other (common) book. Sometimes I made a new item following the directions in the mod ("In the Creation Kit, right-click in Statics, click New, then Edit and choose your mesh. Name it and place it anywhere you want in your cell.").

So, I load my House mod as the active file and Resources as a non-active file. I copy BookOpen from Resources and place it in my House. I save House.esp. I close & reopen the CK, open both mods House and Resources like before, and the BookOpen is gone from the House mod. It's still listed in the Object Window and shows up in the Resources mod, but never sticks around.... When I add it, the Count goes up, and the Use Info displays correctly; it's listed as an object in the Cell Window with a unique Form ID and everything. And yes, when I go into the House ingame the items aren't there either. Which makes sense. :)

Am I missing something stupid? I swear I've made my own items before (like lights, before I figured out that I didn't have to, and a couple of non-respawning containers) and didn't have this problem, but maybe I'm mis-remembering. Do items created in one mod really "belong" only to that mod? I've tried checking for odd references, etc and can't see anything obvious. Do I have to re-create these items in each mod?

Any help is appreciated!! :)

You need to convert your resource mod into an .esm (a master.) Then your mod (an .esp) will be able to use items from it. The way Elder Scrolls games are, .esp files cannot use things from other .esp files unless you follow certain procedures. Those procedures are a pain, and things can get lost and broken.

Here is a link to a wiki page on this subject: Creating Custom Master Files.

I am not totally sure of its accuracy, but I know that some of the stuff on that page works.

Ah - guess I didn't remember it working earlier after all.... ;)

Now I just have to get organized and figure out which will be more convenient - re-making some items or making everything dependent on another .esm... Decisions, decisions....

But at least you've solved the mystery for me! Thank you so much!! :D
