Can you change the weapon modification key for Fallout: New Vegas because I spilt water on my keyboard for my laptop and lost the three keys above ctrl fn and start. so they no longer work, While everyone is gonna be like "you lost your left shift key?! HOW DO YOU PLAY ANY FPS!?" simple, i rebound the sprint to caps lock, its literally right there. But yea I can't use those keys so I require assistance in figuring out how to rectify this problem.

Keyboard layouts vary a lot by manufacturer and country with laptops, so I won't guess just what keys you need to remap.

First of all you are going to need to find a copy of the DirectX "scan codes" that gives you the hex code values, such as here.

Then open the "FalloutPrefs.INI" file in your "Users" folder and locate the "[Controls]" section. That lists various "functions" with the "hex scan code" for each. Change the ones you need (preserve leading zeros so you have exactly 8 characters for the code) and save.

I would suggest you only change what you have to there to get you into the game main menu where you can use the "Settings | Keyboard" menu interface to make most changes.

See 'Issue: How to determine what keystrokes are being passed' in the 'Solutions to Control problems' section of the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" article if you have problems.

Most laptops will let you use an external keyboard plugged into the PS2 or USB port. You should be able to get a used one for about $10US from most computer repair shops. (They usually have a bunch laying around taking up space. Check all the keys work first.)

heck I forgot to say it was a qwerty keyboard. I have my left shift my z key and my x all not working due to a water spillage. ALSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I tried checking the prefini but i can't find the modification button within the menu. I want to attach a night vision scope to my varmint rifle and i can not do so because my key don't work.

Aha. You are talking about the mod "Weapon Mod Menu", which is separate from the game INI default key assignments. (I didn't realize that initially.) That is controlled by a "menu" XML file of the mod itself, and it does not appear to have a means of easily changing the key (<x>) assigned to that function in MCM.

The XML file involved is "Data\Menus\prefabs\WMM\WMMTrigger.XML". The first two lines are:

<_PCButton_E> WMMCancel </_PCButton_E>
<_PCButton_X> WMMTrigger </_PCButton_X>

I would imagine if you change "_PCButton_X" to a different letter that would do it. Be sure to keep a backup, just in case.

Other than hacking the mod itself (the author hasn't been around for years), the only "workarounds" I can see are:

1. Get your keyboard repaired. (The best long term solution.)

2. Re-map another key to send the <x> key scan code instead. See this article or similar.

3. Use a game accessory such as the "Nostromo Speedpad N52" (which I use; there are others) that lets you send any keystroke or combination (macros) thereof from a separate device.

I'm not actually using a mod, new vegas has in game modifications if you have gun runners, which allows you to modify weapons with attachements, but the problem is I can't access the menu in the pip boy because I don't have the key. what is this?! YOU POSTED EXACTLY 12 HOURS APART

Re: The timestamp on posts. The Nexus is based in England, so it uses UTC (Greenwich) timezone for it's software timestamps. What you see is adjusted by your browser from that to display your local timezone equivalent of that UTC time.

I generally check the forums several times a day starting in the evening EST (US: -5 hours from UTC) until the morning about the time most people go to work (8-9 AM local), and reply as I encounter things. So my postings tend to cross over from one day to the next. The rest is just coincidence. I could fairly easily make postings 12 hours apart.

Re: Your key problem. The game menus use XML files as well. Don't know just where the equivalent code is for GRA (always used WMM since the beginning of play), or if it's as easy to change as that in WMM. But since WMM's XML files override, why not try installing it, making that change, and see if that can't solve your particular problem?

I will give it a try, but will it disable achievements for steam? Also I went into my registry, and changed my X key to my colon semi-colon key, but new vegas isnt registering the change for some reason. It seems to have over ridden the computer like that somehow.

Even if you disable "steam achievements" by using the game console, they are only temporarily disabled until you start a new session. Just exit the game to the desktop and restart it: achievements enabled again. there is also a mod that permits that (forget what at the moment).

I provided the section with the program links that can tell you what scan code is actually getting passed by your <semi-colon> key in my first reply. Check that to see what is actually getting sent.

If you hack the registry but it doesn't do what you expected, I strongly recommend you restore it to it's previous setting before you lose track of what you did. Hopefully you exported the key before altering. Even with training, registry hacking is not something to take lightly. There are usually multiple keys that have to be changed.

Ok so I used keyview, and I don't really know my way around computers that much, I don't know what i'm looking at I looked at the geck page but I dunno what its saying and I dunno how to deter what information is and what needs to be sent. Should I just use some sorta custom keymod? Currently undergoing information overload because i have to do classwork, and fill out applications. so my brain is scrambled.

Keyview is independent of the game, and is merely showing you the scan codes being sent when you press particular keys. It's purpose is to enable you to confirm what scan code has been assigned to a given key, particularly after you have remapped one. See the article in post #4 of this thread on how to remap a key.

Though frankly I think the edit to WMM's XML file suggested in post #4 would be easiest for FNV purposes.
