russader
Has anyone sucessfully changed a Vanilla NPC to say a Demon or Mystic Elf and it still works? I'm just looking for some suggestions, help guidence, etc, so please feel free to post anything. that could help. If you know what I'm talking about you don't need to read on.If you don't know what I'm talking about here is a rundown of what I've done so far... Okay, I haven't seen anyone talk about this yet, maybe I just typed in the wrong stuff in the search, but here it goes. What I've done. Step 1 Installed BP 2.7Step 2 Installed Better RedguardsStep 3 Installed RobertsStep 4 deleted all .esp files and used the merged one.Step 5 Installed and merged Chins Demon Race, and Azazel using Tesgeco.Step 6 gave Azazels Demons Race the flight ability from Chins. "Gotta love the Geco!" All good so far. If you play as a Demons race you can now fly just like Chins Demon. Azazel now also take flight when you do, though he looks kinda funny. Still, it worked. Step 7. Merged and did the same with Companion Succubus Kaleah. Still going good. Step 8. Noticed Azazels Demon Race weren't right so I redirected to Rens eyes and changed Azazels to match. Also changed the Khajiit females to point to the correct bodies. Wow! Everything is still working! I don't normally get this far before breaking something. Step 9 Merged a massive clothing replacer I've been working on for a long time. So now I have one massive Race/Clothing replacer that works with the over 100 other mods I have running perfectly. :) Next, the NPCs Step 10 Changing the NPCs faces slightly along with using some of the hundreds of eyes and hair I merged before. Also change up their clothing to incorporate the new ones. SAVE!!!! Everything is perfect! WOW! Sep 11 Noticing there are no other Demons, Mystic elves, Etc. walking around in Cyridell. :( I feel so lonely! Decided to change some of the NPCs. ********************Warning Will Robenson Warning ************************************ WTF!!! Some of them don't have bodies? and lipsinking? Uhm Yeah, closed mouths. Thank god I learned to backup.
Vagrant0
Changing the race of Vanilla NPCs is never suggested because it tends to break their dialogues. This is true even of changing to another vanilla race with the same voice set. Essentially, the only way to make custom race NPCs not screw things up would be to make new NPCs that use them and rebuild any dialogues needed. As none of the race mods, as far as I'm aware, are .esm based, this tends to be more trouble than it's worth, especially since race mods are notorious for not wanting to work with eachother. Most of the issues from this tend to deal more with dialogues having no sound, which tends to make the use of those NPCs a bit limited unless you have a VA around to voice an entire race. And even then, since you will need to alter some dialogues like greetings, combat sounds, and other stuff which is key to making that race work, it will probably conflict with other race mods. Essentially, although it can be done, it breaks too many other things in the process, so isn't advised.

giskarduk
Vagrant0 is correct but if you want to do it. Delete the refer NPC in the game world, change NPC race in the CS, clone it and place a new ref using that cloned version in its place. The Cloning forces an update that the master form sometimes fails to account for. Changing an existing NPC that in to a merchant will reveal the problem im refering too. Having said that a race change may work but ive seen a sex change result in some funky manly dialog from female NPCs and visa versa So over all, id say this falls in to the "NOT" recommended catagory of editing but if you want to do it, the above will do what you need. Just be warned, the above will also break any quests that use those NPCs but will be ok for other NPCs. giskard
