Hi all,

I am quite new to Morrowind, and after meeting Caius I have spent most of my time doing duties for mages and generally getting used to things. I have gone to Caius again, then on to the fighters guild in Balmora, who have sent me to find the small box.

I am working my way through the mine place, killing everyone that attacks me mainly, but after jumping a bridge there is a guy with a huge hammer weapon that I cannot beat. My magicka is only 30 so I don't seem to be able to use most of my spells (shield spells etc) and cannot find a way to beat him.

Is it best to use an intervention and get out, to come back later when i am better, or is there a simpler way of killing him?

Also, to improve my Magicka, do I just have to cast loads of spells, as it seems like a bit of a waste.

Sorry about the simplicity of the way I talk about that, I am completely new to this type of game!

Thanks for any help, it would be appreciated.

Matt

Well, Matt, I'd say if you really want to complete the quest now then run past him, or jump past him. Get by him pretty much. If you can't defeat him or run past, then you might want to run back to town and get some potions. If its the guy on the big dwemer bridge who summons a skeleton, I'd say you should lead him near the steapest cliff, then when he's a little beside the bridge, start walking on the rail of the bridge so that he falls off the cliff, it'll be a while before he'll ba able to get back on. *Spoilers*

Since this is inside the ruin, it's quite possible to bypass the guy entirely. In the entrance section of the Hall of Centrifuge, there is an elevated level that contains a spear resting upon a piece of Dwemer furniture -- it should be above the original positions of the first two smugglers you encountered (the pair with the Steel Daggers). Also on that platform is a door leading to the room that has the Dwemer puzzle box. If you're fast and can take a beating, just run through the door and grab the box, then make a dash back to the door while avoiding Boss Crito to the best of your ability.

thanks for the replies, I think the best thing to do then is to run for it!

What is the best way to improve my magicka though, can you only improve by using spells? It seems a bit of a waste to just use a spell for no reason for the sake of using it?

Thanks

Hey seeing as you are a noob you should tell him that you DO need to cast spells cause if you cast spells that are based on intelligence based schools( example:conjuration) you get stat modifiers for intelligence when u get a level up, thats the only practical way of doing it, unless you wanna wait 30 levels till you get 60 magicka which is pretty low...

You can train in any skill that uses intelligence as its attribute. If you train ten times when you level up you will get a five point multiplier for intelligence when you level (unless you hit 95). You do not NEED to cast any spells to do this.

I recommend creating a really low spell in whatever field of magic you would like. (My chosen field is Destruction - Use the tall High elf in Balmora mage guild... i forget her name)

Make a spell that does as little damage as possible, Eg 1pt fire damage on touch (for Destruction) that costs 1 Magicka point to cast, then whenever you're on a mission, grab the restore magicka potions from the Mage Guild supply chest and run around casting your spell over and over, for every successful cast you will gain 2 points out of the 100 needed to advance a level.

You should be able to level up nicely on treks between towns... That is a purist way of practicing your skills... there are mods and cheats but I say keep the game as it was intended... you'll get a lot more out of it!
