Very unstable game - please look over my load order

Ok guys, I've been playing Bethesda games for some time now and modding them since FO3? By modding I mean that I use other peoples works as I admittedly don't understand mod creation well enough to do it myself. After working with mods and the related tools (FO4Edit, etc) for the past several years however I thought I had a pretty good understanding of what would constitute a "reasonable" mod & / or load order. I was apparently wrong.

My game takes forever to load, like 20 minutes or longer, and then is unstable as hell, crashing every 60 - 90 minutes give or take. This is likely some form of memory leak where the longer I play the larger some virtual memory file is getting until it finally crashes. The crash will most often happen when zoning, when using VATS, or if I quickly run into an area of heavy fighting.

 

I don't mind dropping some stuff from my load order, but honestly don't know where to start so I still have the majority of the features that I'm looking to keep while cutting enough overhead to give my system some breathing room. Please take a look at my load order and tell me if you see the smoking gun that I've missed.

 

NOTE: yes I know the load order is big, and no I typically do not use LOOT. I found too many of the mods I use were unrecognized by LOOT and it tended to place them in all manner of weird locations relative to each other, so I had to manually resort 1/2 of them after running LOOT anyway.

 

NOTE II: I run F4SE, ENB and Place Anywhere. None of which do I think are visible in my load order.

That's a s#*!-ton of mods. Don't get me wrong, I run quite a few, but most of mine are related to items such as clothing, objects, etc. If I were guessing, and I'm no expert, you've got some mod-conflicts going on that load order won't help. Again, I'm not an expert, but if it were my system, I'd just start removing mods that I didn't think were crucial to my game until the situation improved. Crashing every 60-90 minutes isn't ideal, but not the end of the world. But a 20 min load time is crazy. Mine is about 2 minutes and that's with about 200 mods or so.

My mod list rivaled that, and I got it running stable. LOOT did most of the work, but I did have to tweak it a bit.

 

First off, you can't have mods changing the same thing, UNLESS there is a patch for that. I am assuming you know that, though. I didn't look at your list too carefully, but I did notice some mods that altered settlements - do NOT use that with a mod that universally alters all settlements. I had that problem. It seemed to be working, but I was getting quest glitches.

 

I had to disable scrap Everything in my most recent playthrough - it wasn't playing nice with the game/F4SE update (so it needs an update itself). I've read in several places NOT to use the 'Ultimate Edition' - its full of errant code (as the guy who made it worked on it, he didn't bother to 'clean it up', so there are lots of dead files in there). At least, that's what I've read. The solution is to just use the individual .esp's when you install. Some folks say just use just the Core one for now. However, I have to say even that didn't work for me, but I am having other problems so that might work for you.

 

To be honest - and this is coming from a guy who's mod list probably rivals yours - you are just running way to many. The computer is gagging on all of that. My machine is a BEAST, and it still slows down after a couple hours of play. There is no avoiding that - even the most professional of coders miss some stuff and you get 'memory leakage', and who knows how good modders are at that? So many times I have read mod descriptions that had something like this: "my mod does this, this and this. However, it doesn't <something> accurately, and sometimes you get 'stuck' when you <something>. I also can't get it to work with <this, this, & this, etc.>, so if anyone else has any ideas about how to fix that let me know."

 

Stay away from those - that's a person who can do one or two things really well, but a GOOD modder basically needs to juggle a dozen different skills and be at least very good at all of them. If you don't understand EVERYTHING about the thing you are trying to change, then DON'T. I tried my hand at modding and broke more than I fixed, so I know what I am talking about. Just some very general advice there.

 

EDIT: And what the above poster said is 100% true - if you're game is taking that long to boot-up, then you are definitely choking your machine with all of that. My mod list is about 326 last time I checked, and I was able to start my game in under two minutes. Just sayin'.

do the sensible thing and remove anything you don't need. that load order is, honestly, ridiculous.

I thank you guys for the feed back, I would point out that many of the mods in that list are listed with a = 0 at the end, meaning that while they are loaded they are not activated in the current play through. More importantly they have not been activated at any point in the play through (I'm not turning them on and off or similarly dumb things). What you are seeing is a straight dump from Nexus Mod Manager (NMM).

I did go back after posting this and pulled a few mods that I suspected might be part of the problem. Scrap Everything being among them. So far the instability issues have been really minimal since then. I get 3 - 5 hours or straight play before a crash, and a load time of only a couple of minutes. I must be on to something.

I found my own problem - which was different from yours - also lead back to Scrap Everything and Place Everywhere. Both can break pre-combines, and I believe Scrap Everything even had an option to do just that universally (so if you chose that option during install, it 'may' have added a line to your ini files disabling pre-combines, which would kill your game stability overall. The author of the mod even warns against using the feature.

Yeah, I'm still using Place Everywhere and it seems to be running ok and still leaves me with 70% functionality of Scrap Everything. For the things it cant handle I've gotten around that with the Disable Console Command. While not as smooth and immersive as I'd like, it seems to be doing the job rather well without the instability issues.
