I think Bethesda needs to release the Skyrim source code

Bethesda couldn't release the source code for the game engine even if they wanted to as it doesn't belong to them.

Skyrim/New Vegas, FO3 & Oblivion run on various versions of the Gamebryo engine, Morrowind ran on it's predesesor NetImmerse.

All of wich is owned by Gamebase USA LLC

Actually, Skyrim's engine was written by Bethesda specifically to suit their needs. O_____o

Wrong. The engine was edited to suit their needs. The Gamebryo engine is not owned by Bethesda, and releasing the source code would kill Bethesda in a second.

I'm pretty sure Skyrim is on a brand new engine called "Creation".

At the end of the day it doesn't matter whether you call it a "Game Engine", "Middleware" or "An Alien Incursion". Somebody wrote a big pile of computer code, and a lot of it wasn't Bethesda.

Read this for some interesting results found by scaning the executable.

Is there a way to convince Bethesda to release the source code for Skyrim (maybe even Oblivion and Morrowind) so we can create even better mods like adding new enemies, weapons, etc?

That can all be done the CK, so why do you need the source code?

Bethesda have to use other tools as well. They can't create 3D models and animation with the CK.

If anything, they should release a proper 3DMax / Maya plugin that exports nifs in the correct format that Skyrim can use.

Doom 3's source code was released. If any game they would release the source of Morrowind one would think, but it's very unlikely since in Doom's case id software (who released the game) created the engine and thus didn't have any problems with licencing except for a small piece of code which was removed.

Not to mention all of id software's games source codes are released as well which is one of the reasons why the Doom Community remains the largest game community today.

Here's a list of games that have their source codes released.
