wysiwyg
I've had Windhelm crashes where I get a CTD when entering a new Windhelm cell either on foot or by fast travel. The only solution I figured out was clearing the weather. In the console, using the ~ key, issue the following command: fw 10e1f2 This clears the weather and forces a nice sunny day. I do this whenever the Windhelm blizzard makes me crash and the problem goes away. I tried disabling mods, checking the script log for errors, and restoring the standard low-res snowflakes with no effect. This is the only thing that works for me. You lose some of the Windhelm "charm" of always walking around in a snow storm though. It might not always be possible to do this for fast travelling to Windhelm from somewhere far away. You might need to travel somewhere in the same area and then clear the weather before approaching.
abc123qw
Have you tried it with a clean install of skyrim?
Tok84
I think it has to do with the mod 'Natural Rain' with was included in the realistic lighting mod as option. Since I'm using the latest version of realistic lighting, which DOESN'T include rain anymore, I'm having crashes at Windhelm. Well, at least i think so. I tried to approach from south and everytime at the exact same invisible border it crashed. Guess that's when the weather script kicks in. Wish i'd never had installed the goddamn rain mod. Riften area around Goldenglow Estate got messed up too because of it. (Well again, at least I think so.) Isn't there a way to reset or replace the weather scripts again in order to repair this issue in the saves? If you know something helpful, POST IT! I'll also keep my eyes open. But thanks for the tip with the weather change via console. I'll try that now...
wysiwyg
I haven't used any weather changing mods so I can only guess. It might be a script attached to the cell though. Have you enabled script logging to look for errors? I cut down on CTDs quite a bit by fixing some scripts where the source was available. Sometimes Skyrim won't use the new script instead of the existing script from the save file because it was already running during the save though. I got around this by changing a variable in another event, etc. Unfortunately, unless you're a programmer or familiar with Papyrus scripts they might be hard to resolve. Tok84
Unfortunately I'm not a programmer, so I'll stick to the 'Sunny Windhelm solution'. :D I was able to complete my quest in windhelm, so im happy for now. Thanks again!
Blu02
I'm having practically the same problem now as well. I can travel to Windhelm on foot though, and fast travel into the city. But as soon as I'm teleporting out of the city, either through the city gates or by fast traveling to a location within the outer Windhelm cell, it crashes to desktop. Really frustrating timing as I was just about to buy a house there and join the Stormcloaks :( The only thing I recall I did in the area before this started was to begin the "Find the Thalmor Assassin"-quest, where the Khajiit assassin just outside the city bugged out and made me have to use a console-command to fix (Known bug mentioned on UESP Wiki). But after completing the quest, the crashes remains, which I guess eliminates this theory. Clearing the weather seems to work for me too though! I'm not using "Realistic Lighting" or "Natural weather", but about 90% of the mods listed in STEP 2.0, and some additional armor/clothing/body-mods that shouldn't affect this. Too much to list and go through, but I cant think of anything that messes with the weather in particular, or the area around Windhelm. Btw, anyone tried the old "fix" by traveling to the other side of the map and "wait" for 7 days before returning again? This is how most CTD-zones would disappear in Oblivion, as the cell would reset. Not sure if it's the same in Skyrim though. I'll remember to try this next time I start the game. Tok84
@ Mr.Bravo The bugged script might be the problem. the script is still in your saves i think. i read something like that about broken quests: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/703954-are-you-having-constant-exterior-ctds-ive-finally-found-your-solution/ You need to wait 31 days. But you should do it in the "test chamber". This is a guide how to do it: http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Troubleshooting#Clean_Save_Procedure Hope this helps.... Tok84
SOLVED THE PROBLEM!!! For me this wasn't script related at all! My windows vista 32-bit only uses 2GB virtual memory by default. I enabled the 3GB SWICTH (just google for it) and now all my CTD's are gone. I mean ALL OF THEM! not only near windhelm. Near goldenglow estate (west of riften) f.e. works fine too. Well, ok, i still have freezes sometimes in the triangle northwest from Darkbrotherhood sanctuary, but that's pretty sure because I lack Video memory (only 512mb and i have some texture replacers, for the mountains f.e.). Monitored the usage of the vRAM, it was over 500 when the freezes occur and it started stuttering before freezing I think the CTD's near windhelm wear related to my increased ugridstoload=7 and with only 2GB Virtual memory it simply couldn't store the huge information for this area. The weather change to sunny probably decreased this information but now I can have a cold windhelm again like it's supposed to be.
DirtyDonk
If you, like me, have the problem with the CTD happening when looking east right as you enter windhelm, look in this thread where EMH have found a solution.http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/718451-ctd-when-looking-to-the-east-while-in-windhelm/page__view__findpost__p__6081980 Tried it, and it solved my problem immediately where no other solution worked.
