Sharks and whales? (More)

Hey there, is anyone wanting Sharks, Whales, Jelly fish, (etc) in the lakes, ponds and rivers? I do!

Can anyone do that? Make at least a few sharks and HUGE whales? Oh, and some extinct 'fish' like things.

Frogs and new birds - Flamingos for example. killable new birds.

Thanks! Skyrim would be downright perfect for me if we had these! Please and thank you! :turned:

  • 1 year later...

I am working on this now.

What I find strange is that there WERE several mods made with excellent Whale Meshes, but they all were edited to remove the whales, and not the meshes cannot be found anywhere.

I suspect he Liberal Enviro-NAZIS and Peta Animal Rights Fascists.

I think they attack the host of the web site, i.e. Nexus if anyone creates content where any "Endangered Species" is portrayed as the target of Hunting and Eating.

I do not know this for sure, but it seems so, and I am leary of trying to add Whales now. Though I also hate to let the Fascists win.

If I could find Whale Meshes, I'd use them.

It is a GAME, set in an ERA of low Human Population Density and Technolgy!

I would not Hunt and EAT Dragons in real life either!

I did find an Oblivion mod with meshes for whales.

http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/34155/?

I know that with some effort, the meshes can be converted to go from Oblivion to Skyrim.

So most of the work of creating a Skyrim Whale has been done.

The problem is, I'm afraid that I'll get it complete, only to find that I'll have the mod blocked when I go to release it. So why bother?

Maybe, if you ask the author, he'd allow you to do so?

According to his forum profile, he's still active.

I'll give it a try.

Looking through the Oblivion Mods, now that the modding community there is not only mature, but fading away, I have to wonder why so many good mods from Oblivion never got Skyrim Converstions...

Then In remembered STEAM!

That realization has me considering returning forever to Oblivion Modding.

Well, maybe you could make the whales unkillable? I mean, they are much too large for lakes anyways and they don't usually come very close to shore. So you could have like statically animated whale meshes out in the deep oceans that you can see swim around and occasionally surface from far away (there are videos of these very impressive jumps whales make, when they rise out of the water and sorta fall back down). The player would have to swim for quite a long ways to even notice that they're not real creatures, and why would they even try to kill one? A blue whale is friggin huge, I don't think there's much a single person without a ship or harpoons can do to it, even if it's the Dragonborn. Especially considering you can't shout or cast while swimming.

It would also make things a lot easier on you if you don't have to rig them to a skeleton like a real creature, you can just give them a looping swim-jump-swim animation cycle and be done with it. Sorta like the falcons are done in Skyrim.

Sharks and dolphins could technically be done similarly, just have them swim around so the fin shows from time to time, and make dolphins jump near the harbours. Here it might be a bit unimmersive if you can't interact with them though, especially since sharks would attack when you get to close... on the other hand I don't really like hostile sea life, it's hard enough to kill a slaughter fish because they're hard to see from the shoreline and you can't fight underwater.

The Peta theory sounds a bit paranoid, though. I guess it's possible, but it does sound a bit extreme... there already are endangered species that can be hunted in Skyrim, at least in Europe wolves and bears are practically extinct. And you can skin them and make pelts, wouldn't that rile up the animal rights fascists as well?

Either way, I really love the idea. The occasional whale or dolphin in the distance would really enhance the atmosphere tremendously. And jellyfishes! I love glowing things. Would really add to the otherwise pretty boring waterscape of Skyrim.

I wouldn't consider the Peta theory paranoid. They tried to have the band Petshop Boys change their name to the Rescue Shelter Boys (http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Music/04/10/peta.pet.shop.boys/), rose a major s-storm over Whaling in AC4 (http://www.polygon.com/2013/3/6/4070836/peta-objects-whaling-in-assassins-creed-4), AND have even taken it too far in video games with Super Mario Bros. 3, specifically the tanooki costume (http://features.peta.org/mario-kills-tanooki/). The fact that Peta hasn't been in the main-stream about Skyrim is actually a little surprising, but I'm glad for the silence.

And I agree, the "loop in the far distance" would be a pretty cool mod to add some realism to my Tamriel.

Saerileth - I have already included a large static simulation of a whale in my mode, just to trial the tech, and it does kinda work, if the script is writen so that the static breaches for a blowhole effect only when the player is in a pursuing boat.

The Long-Island Sleigh Ride after harpooning the whale was a thrill and a hoot!

But Skyrim is a game designed for first person interaction, and sooner or later, to tell a good story, the player ends in the water where the whale should be, and then the spell is broken, because you have make a big splash and disable the unreal, incomplete whale mesh.

Also, I wouldn't come up with anything other than a loading screen cut-scene to do the whale Slaughter and boil down for Lamp Oil.

I did find a reference as to another theory about why Bethesda had a Whale Bone Bridge, but no whales. Its in the lore, that Shor is embodied in the Whales, and he has "Phased" them out of Skyrim because of a spat with the other gods. The same argument is make about Snakes, another item we see in the icons of the puzzles, but not in the game.

I forget which god is supposed to be the snakes, but that explaination makes a bit of sense.

JAvatar80 - Yes, I've run into these radicals in modding on other games, and they're good and getting companies/sites like Nexus to ban their enemies.

The thing I find annoying, is that I agree about game managment, wise use, and limited harvests, and putting an ability to hunt the whales to extinction, and then be without the resource forever, is a great way to TEACH youth about conservation.

Better mythic Snow Whales be made extinct, and a lesson is learned in virtual space, than real Mantees are killed off completely for cheap thrill in a speed boat.

notmyhome - No response, and I'm not having much luck on finding Oblivion to Skyrim Mesh Converstion info either.

I haven't given up, but I am focused on Fish/Sharks/Shellfish/ReefLife for now.

The Whales are needed element though. And Shrimp!

I think I may have come up with a way to make a passable shrip by modifying a spider with several limbs in the skeleton made alpha channel invisable.
