Ancalagon
Alright, I've been with Thief ever since the Beta/Demo came out via PC Gamer (I also bought the mag ^_^ ) I would venture to say that I am one of the biggest taffers out there when it comes to Thief, I love the games to death because they're so intriguing to play and they're so bloody hard to boot. Ever since TTLG tanked, I've been rather skeptical about Ion Storm's intentions with Thief: Deadly Shadows. The purpose of this thread is to see who thinks T: DS will top it's predecessors or if it will tank horribly. Personally, I feel that it will do well. It has several of the people from TTLG working on it (or almost all of them, so I have heard) so at least it isn't completley different people designing the game, also, I'm a diehard fan :shifty: . I must admit I winced at the thought of it being availiable for Console Users, as the two previous games were strictly PC. Also, the RPG element was dropped and the game was more streamlined for Xbox players so they could enjoy it. IMMAO I think this will detract from the emersion factor the other two games had, in terms of RPG and complexity of using equipment to be a truly succesful Thief. More to come, once I get some other opinions on here :P ~A.
Darnoc
Yeah, I am also a Thief-veteran and Thief is acctually my favourite game. And I also agree with you, Ancalagon, that Thief III will make fine. One last question: What is your favourite level? Mine is "Return to the Cathedral".
Ancalagon
Hrm, on T: DP it's a tie between 'Assassins' and 'Song of the Caverns (Gold Edition)' For T: TMA it's a tie between 'Life of the Party' and 'Precious Cargo' Because they were so bloody fun to play and took me hours to complete. Darnoc
Yeah, at Thief II I agree with you, those two were the best one.
Ancalagon
But as far as T: DS goes, I heard they're going to increase Garrett's ability to fight the guards. This was done, IMO, for the sake of the console owners. In the previous games, I wouldn't dream of sticking around for a fight if I was discovered. I would run like hell...and hide for ten minutes. Now Garrett can actually stand a chance...whatever floats the console player's boats...but I'm still staying to a strict 'No killing' policy as always. Also, Ion Storm got rid of the Rope/Vine Arrows and replaced them with climbing gloves. I really don't care about this, but I'll miss rope arrows like hell. Again it was done for the sake of the Xbox owners, since it would be difficult for them to aim, and press buttons etc. <_< . I really am disappointed how much was taken out for the sake of the Console Players. This seems like an appeal to a larger audience, of which TTLG was never known to do, but this is Ion Storm not Looking Glass... Anyhow, I think the removal of the broadsword and replacing it with a dagger is a good change. I never used the broadsword anyways (save to kill beasties and such, not people). Still though, Garrett looks like an assassin now, (via the third person view, which I am boycotting by not using it :P ) but just like the broadsword, I plan on not using the dagger unless necessity calls for it (and even then, I may just use a speed potion and flashbomb as I always do :shifty: ). Darnoc
Why couldn't they just make a PC and an X-box Version where those things in the PC-version (like rope arrows) were still the same?
Ancalagon
Good question, in any case I was hoping there would be a construction set or map editor along with the game so I could find some folk to add in rope arrows...but IS is considering not releasing a CS for T: DS. Also, it irritates me that they placed a static compass surrounding the light gem so that the 'Xboxers' don't have to cycle through and bring up the compass the old fashioned way. All this streamlining is really getting me pissed off, since it's just an appeal to the friggin' console owners so they can enjoy Thief (hack and slash, damn it all <_< ) Anyhow, I'm still buying the game when it comes out, because I am a diehard fan of Garrett :P
Zmid
I am looking forward to Thief III quite a bit for one main reason - the AI is out of this world. An example I saw in one magazine really caught my attention. They were having a wee sneak preview of it in the developers studio, and one of the developers was playing a level. He was sneaking through a room and a goblet caught his eye, so he filched it. He heard a guard coming, so he ducked down behind a box. As the guard walked through, instead of blindly overlooking the missing goblet, he stopped dead and said, 'That's different, who took that?' and started searching the room. The developer tried sneaking backwards, away from the guard, but accidentally knocked something over. The guard drew his sword and started towards the sound, saying, 'That's right, make more noise, it'll make it easier for me to find you.' The developer managed to sneak over to another part of the room to hide behind a different box, but the guard, his suspicions up, was thoroughly searching the room, looking behind boxes, under tables, everywhere, so the developer was discovered, which was when he legged it. The above gives you a small taster of the complexity of the AI, and, according to the developers, this was NOT a scripted event, and the player could make things such as this happen dynamically at any point in the game. Apparantly, the guards will also notice not only things like bodies lying in passageways, but pools of blood, things like boxes which have been moved, loot which has been stolen, and other things of that nature. Not only that, there are going to be several levels of suspicion in the guards. For example, if they notice something that has been moved slightly and that's it, they won't be very suspicious, so they will give the room a quick search before moving on, but if they see a big pool of blood or something, they will draw their swords and be very thorough in their search. Ancalagon
Wow, that's freakin' awsome. That sounds so much better than the AI from the previous Thief games.
ohGr
eidos are making it, of course there is good AI, look at Deus Ex 2, i was at the last area of the game, Liberty Island, these guys who can blend in with terrain, given away by a blue glow, one shoots at me, i fire back, dodges it back, throws a chair at me to distract me, meanwhile suicide bombs at me, NOW thats clever!. i also saw the trailer from DX2....looks brilliant....pity it is rendered...
