Video Hardware Not Recognized:

Like the subtitle says on the topic. Oblivion doesn't want to recognize my new graphics card.

I got the card along with a computer kit that I bought a few days ago. While I was building said machine I kept getting images of how glorious Oblivion would look on a system almost twice as fast as my old one. 8 hours and at least 2 near heart attacks later I am ready to begin gaming on my new machine. Imagine my surprise when all my games work... except Oblivion. The game runs well enough, but when I go to the options menu on the flash screen before I load the game, I keep getting a message that says "video hardware unrecognized, defaulting to medium settings".

I've installed Oblivion patch 1.2.0416 as well as the Unofficial Oblivion Patch v3.2 but neither have done the trick. :wallbash:

By the way, my card is an Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT. If you need more system specs than that to determine the problem let me know and I will post them.

Better yet, just to be safe:

Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT

2Gb of ram

2.2 Ghz processor (Intel Dual Core)

320Gb Seagate Hard Drive

:thanks:

My computer currently runs Oblivion on medium/medium-high just off the built in card on my motherboard. But I still don't know why the game won't see and therefore use the card I installed.

It's most likely using the card. Since the card was created after Oblivion, the launcher is unable to "recognize" it. That doesn't mean it isn't being used. It just means Oblivion can't auto-adjust to the capabilities of your card when you start the launcher.

Somewhere deep in the bowels of the Oblivion install routine there is a section that calls for a look up on a database of known vid cards. It then uses the information stored there to set up the game to work with the minimum requirements for that card. NOT the best settings for it.

That database has not been updated at least since the v1.2 patch, and probably not even then as it doesn't recognize my 7600 card.

So any vid card less than about 2 years old will not be recognized. Most people end up editing the settings anyway. Those 'default' settings are just to get you started.
