Laptop for college

Recommended Posts

I'm heading off to college in just over a month. My new job has terrible hours, but I'm making a pretty large amount of money, and I'm going to need a laptop. I don't really want a gaming laptop per se, as those cost too much and I'd rather stick with my desktop rig for heavy gaming. However, I definitely want the laptop to be able to run older games on low settings, such as Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall, etc. I'm looking for a laptop with an actual graphics card, but it doesn't have to be very good, as I'd like the price to stay loosely around $600 and I'm not buying it for the eyecandy.

Here are some options I'm considering. Please point out anything you see wrong with them, and give advice on which one(s) are best.

Laptop Video Graphics Cards - Benchmark List at Notebook Check - has mobile graphics comparisons.

Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart at Tom's Hardware - has desktop and mobile graphics comparisons, but is not very complete, still useful though.

Dropping the second and third laptops due to slower graphics cards with shared memory. The first and fourth laptops are close to the same, but I prefer the first over the fourth because of an i5 over an i3, a 630M 2GB over a 630M 1GB, and is only $20 more.
