So... This Mod Already Exists, But...

So I came across this mod and I think it looks awesome! Maybe y'all have heard of it... Real Weapons Replacer.

I tried contacting the author, but apparently he's been banned for some reason. If anyone can somehow get permission from him, or her, and take it over I think this would be an awesome mod for anyone, like me, who likes more realistic looking weapons. If I had more know-how and time I would take it over, but unfortunately I don't. Some of the textures could use some updating and polishing. And of course it need a Dual Sheath Redux patch... If anyone could at least make a DSR patch, that would be amazing!

It's a mess. Good luck getting someone to redo it and get the textures into some sort of logical naming and folder path order and fix the excessive poly count on a the Andragorn items, as well as the texturing. (and good luck determining what texture is associated with any given .nif) All of the source mods he used are 2012 era and most have not been touched since then.

Plus, good luck getting permissions from an author you can't contact. His idea was good but as I said, the mod is a mess. The author did what anyone can do at home, switched meshes and changed .nif names to match vanilla, and then dumped in the original authors texture file folders without change, so the .nifs could find them.

Would be better to start fresh and getting permission to use weapons from Mr Dave, RonnieMagnum, Farineli, Real Bows, Moralin and others. I didn't mention some of the other popular weapons modders, simply because I feel a general replacer should be light as far as poly counts and textures.

I have replaced all of the vanilla weapons using mesh and textures from the above modders, as well as a few from Insanity's lore pack and a couple from BillyRo. (privately, I don't offer what I've done as a mod or share it)

Yeah, I kinda thought so... But you're right, it is a good idea...

You said you replaced all the vanilla weapons privately... How exactly do you do that? Sorry, I don't really know much about making mods... I currently use Real Bows, which is a replacer already, and a collection of BillyRo's weapons, a stand alone mod.

How I did it. Step one, I extracted the default data/meshes/weapons folder from the skyrim BSA using a BSA Unpacker. This is just a template to make the loose folders for the replacer nifs, to insure all of the folder and nif names are correct. I store on desktop for now, it's a reference I won't ever install.

Manually DL the weapons I want to use as replacers and store on Desktop. I will only install the texture folders for the weapons I want to use, and install these with no changes at all. This is important as the mesh nifs will reference these even if the nif has been renamed. You won't need the esp if just replacing.

As an example, I want to replace the Steel Sword. In the original skyrim Default meshes/weapons folder I stored on desktop I will find the folder for steel which contains .nifs for the steel sword meshes. I will open the downloaded meshes folder and find the sword mesh .nifs I want to use. I copy paste these to desktop, then change the names on these nifs to match the default nifs. I will make a folder named exactly what the default folder is named, "steel" and place the copied and renamed nifs in it, then place this new folder in Data/meshes/weapons. This folder will only overwrite what it contains, in other words if you only change the steel 1hsword nifs no other steel weapons will be affected.

This loose file will overwrite the BSA and change only the appearance. Stats, crafting, tempering will be unchanged. Level lists will be unchanged. You will not need a new esp. This is ancient cosmetic modding, where you spoof the game to think nothing has changed. This was how I was modding in 1998, basically.

since you already have BillyRo standalone you can simply leave it in, copy his meshes, change nif names, and replace the default vanilla meshes and nothing else. The replaced nifs will have his appearance but otherwise will be vanilla stats, crafting, and distribution and will use his textures. You will have 2 distinct weapons with the same look, one will have Billyro stats, one will be vanilla and you can craft either separately.

One caveat, higher poly count meshes and higher res maps can impact performance, particularly in things like Civil War battles where a pile of npcs will spawn in using them. This was an issue with Germs mod at levels where the NPCs were spawning in with a lot of the high poly Dwarven weaps.

Hopefully I didn't miss anything.

Wow, thank you! I'll have to give that a shot... Ya know, it's pretty cool there's still Skyrim modders, such as yourself, that are still staying in touch with the community and helping modding noobs like me even after the game is going on 8 years old...
