rdoehring
HELP!!!! I have tried everything to get this game to run on my Vista PC. RedRocketTM
Do you have ANY mods installed? If so try to uncheck them to find out which one is doing this. Sometimes mods tend to do this, especially those who require SI if you don't have it... I had exactly the same problem using COBL before I installed SI anyway... ^^"
rdoehring
No mods installed. This is happening on a clean install. I get same results on original game install, with the Oblivion patch installed, and the unofficial patch installed. I've uninstalled and run registry clean programing and even gone into registry and cleaned all Bethesda stuff out manually, then re-installed. Nothing seems to work. MrCooper2006
lol Error Report - Problem Stopped working Thats a lot of help.... Anyway, try it without the Unofficla patch installed, try it with just Oblivion installed unpatched, should start up, then try it with 1.1, then with 1.2. If not of these setups work it must be something wrong locally with your pc
rdoehring
Yeah...Bill Gate's idea of the ideal operating system. I've tried all your suggestions...still crashes at startup. ...and Vista just tells me it's a Bethesda problem, download latest update. I do/did and get same results. I've reinstalled DirectX, disable my AVG antivirus, everything I can think of has been updated. Same result every time. What's really wierd is Need For Speed:Porsche Unleashed, a 6+ year old program my son loves, runs fantastic on this machine. I buy on average 2-3 PC games a month and have never had one crash like this one. Even Crysis played great regardless of the bashing that game took after release. Oh Well...I guess I'll trade it in for Mass Effect or Assassin's Creed. Thanks Everyone!
Michlo
Some people have found that installing to somewhere besides the default helps on Vista. I have a seperate partition for my games so I never even tried installing to C but you might try that before returning it. You will probably need to install it as an admin as well. Just right click "setup" and choose "install as admin". Good luck.
rdoehring
I have tried that, but in reverse. My rig has 2 x 150GB Rapor drives running on Raid 0 and then 2 x 500GB SATA Caviar drives running as normal. I am in the habit of using the WD drives for games and my digital photo work and seldom put such on the C drive. As a last resort, I did re-install Oblivion to the C drive and ran as "admin". Same results. Thank for the tip!
Michlo
I'm sorry it didn't help. I don't understand why you're having such problems. It runs just fine for me on both my 32 and 64 bit Vista boxes.
MrCooper2006
Me neither, has worked for me on XP and Vista 32 and 64bit. No problems at all. Make sure UAC is off in Vista but other than that there shouldnt be a problem. Unless you have some other software that could be conflicting with the installation/running etc? Let me guess, you got a dell? The problem is with the two things I bold typed above. Dell doesn't fix itself to include the great graphics cards, it just downgrades the graphics card to fit it into Dell. First thing, go to the Oblivion shortcut. Right click. Go to Properties. Go to Compatibility. Set it at a lesser than Vista package. Hit Apply. Try it out. Second thing, if first doesn't work, go to NVIdEA's site and get the latest free upgrade/patch..whatever...for your graphics card. Wouldn't hurt to do this even if first idea worked. If it still doesn't work, do these things and reinstall Oblivion, but THIS TIME DO NOT ENABLE THE DIRECT X. The Direct X reads Dell's foulup as a "lesser quality" graphics card instead of a kickass one and thus will auto reset your compatibility to 'medium". Pain in the butt, I know. I had to go through all this myself....rotten Vista. Vista is the primary reason all of this is happening. They rushed this thing out the doors without bothering to check on what SOME people consider more important than having a computer that tells time...playing games. yeah, also disable the nagging UAC feature. Go to Control Panel, type in user control, go to "turn UAC on or off" Turn the thing off, you'll have to restart the computer. All that'll happen is that every time you sign on you get a nagging "your computer may be in danger...blah, blah, blah. yeah, if you don't know what you're doing and use your keyboard for a dinner plate, then yeah, with UAC disabled you will have trouble. Otherwise it's just a hassle to even have.
