PonchoSam
my computer is a Lenovo Y570 I got back in November. normally, when I play Skyrim, I can play it on high settings at about 15 FPS (lame, amirite?) or up to 40 with this thing. However, as of late I have been getting a nice 30 FPS for about 10 minutes, before it drops to 6. A few minutes later, my computer shuts down from overheating. This is incredibly frustrating, as I am trying to start a lets play series. What are some things I can do to prevent my computer from overheating? Erik005
What kind are the specifications of your laptop? Do you have the 555m gt video card? because that should run skyrim better than 15fps. It looks like you are using your iGPU.
bben46
This kind of overheating is often due to plain dirt. Dust gets trapped in the air channels of either the Video card fan or the CPU heat sink. If air cannot get through, it cannot remove the heat build up. Trying to run with this excess heat can damage your computer. PonchoSam
Thanks guys. I will check those links out. I am getting 30-40 FPS, but I notice that when the computer gets to hot it switches from the 555m to the intel GPU.
Rennn
You could buy a laptop cooling pad, but at least check for dust and dirt first. As bben46 said, that can easily cause laptops to overheat. You may want to check your active windows Power Plan as well. If it's set to high performance that can raise cpu frequency, among other things, and can cause more overheating problems. bben46
Laptop fans do get clogged easily. Some laptops have a fan access cover that can be removed to get to the fan - Most do not :wallbash: ALWAYS remove the battery & unplug the laptop before sticking anything into the vents. Pipe cleaners have a metal core that can short out components and damage your laptop if power is not completely removed. Use a pipe cleaner to get into the fan through the vent ports - hobby stores sell extra long pipe cleaners in colors - but plain white is best as it shows just how much crud you are getting out. Canned air should also be used to blow out some crud. but you will need the pipe cleaners to get the big clumps of dust that build up. Use the air, then the pipe cleaners then the air again to get dust that was loosened by the pipe cleaners. If you cannot get good airflow, you may have to take it to someone who knows how and pay them to disassemble the laptop to clean it properly. PonchoSam
I got a can of air, and cleaned out a lot of dust in there. Now my laptop runs COOL. The air coming out of the laptop is significantly cooler than room temp. Also, now I can run Skyrim at 40-ish FPS.
