What to do with conflicting files in the override folder?

Recommended Posts

I wanted to follow up on this thread; https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/184923-conflicting-mods-in-dragon-age/

Especially, what Seden is asking in his necro post. about all other files except character creation stuff.

Let me clarify:

I have dracomies textures, as a necessity for Dragon age Redesigned.

I also have elf update installed, because i really like tmp's take on the elven race.

Now there are a lot of files conflicting, around 200. 1 file for the dracomies textures, and 1 in the many folders of elf update.

Then i found this thread; https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/5303655-combining-jb3textures-with-dragon-age-redesigned/

If i'm reading that old thread correct, then DAR (redesigned) will only use the textures by dracomies by default, but with elf update in the folder i'm hoping it will overwrite DAR?

Can someone confirm, explain to me in baby language if i'm correct, and if not how i solve this?

Thanks in advance!

Ok, once you get outside of talking about the player's "\override" folder, I'm not 100% sure of the order in which the game examines things. But my *impression* is that the "\override" folder is the LAST one checked. That's important because of the way the Eclipse/Aurora engine finds and uses files. It's the LAST one found that's active.

So... If there are multiple mods that contain files with the same filename, the game will only use the LAST one it encounters. It searches alphanumerically through the sub-folders, (of the various folders it's programmed to look in) and slots each file it finds, replacing any that are already found with the next one with the same name that it encounters.

You can "mix-n-match" parts of conflicting mods if you tease out which filenames are identical and make sure that the one(s) you want to be active are found later in the search. I generally do this through careful selection of sub-folder names, but it can get pretty tricky. And you can't have just *part* of a "morrigan.dlg" file (for example) from one mod, and the rest from another. It's all or nothing on a file-by-file basis.

From what I recall here aren't any texture conficts between Dracomies True Textures and tmp7704's elf update... and certainly not 200, since elf update only includes a handful of DDS files. There are a lot of face morph (*.mor files) conflicts though.

Thandal is correct in explaining how the game load files, and the usual method of forcing a folder to take precedence would be to preface the folder name with something like 'zz_'; given folders containg identically named files the game will use the files in 'zz_elf_update' and not those in 'DA_redesigned'.

As to toolsetexport, placing the elf update folder inside of override/toolsetexport should give those morphs priority over the DA Redesigned morphs, but IMO, since you've identified the files that are in conflict, it's much better to just remove the unwanted *.mor files entirely. It's a lot cleaner and eliminates both the need to add additional layers to the file structure and the possibility of any conflicts. (A clean mod folder is a happy mod folder!)

Thanks for that explanation Thandal.

Okay this is a lot clearer for me now. It is indeed all the face morphs, and what made elf update appeal to me so much.

Now lets say for the sake of cleaning, is there any easy way to delete the conflicting files? right now i use the duplicate finder tool, also from the nexus site and it's a great tool to see if there are duplicates. Deleting however will be time consuming. There are around 220.

If i do nothing, according to Thandal there will be a mix of used files from draco and elf update, don't want that neither.

If i can weasel my way out by giving it a simple folder rename, i think i'll do that.

Edit: thanks btw for the fast responses, you guys sure run a tight ship.

Edit2: I will not have any other conflicting files, i combed through 131 pages of mods to install everything i wanted. I'm done now, and the result is quite nice.

Edit3: i've started to delete the conflicting files, except any CC overlap. It doest take as long as i thought hehe. One last question, I use the chargen compiler, if there is a conflicting character creation file, will they both be added to the cc? because i use the compiler.
