knight44
I've been running lots of mods (62 or so) and have gotten them all to work, except that ANY mods that add buildings like castles/dungeons/homes or alter the geometry of the game landscape somehow cause crashed when entering Understone Keep in Markarth. Understone keep seems to me to be the most glitchy when mods want to CTD. I have a quad core with 16 GB mem, a 2 GB NVidea 670 graphics card, have set Windows 7 to allow use of 3 GB memory, so it's not like the machine is chocking for lack of processing power. Has anyone else seen a trend in additional mods of the type mentioned causing more CTD's than normal? Even stripped to bare bones with no mods, adding a mod that adds a house or dungeon (like Markarth underground) causes lots of crashes. Has anyone found a solution to a problem similar to this? I know Skyrim is not the bets piece of code out there, but there must be some way I can take advantage of all the cool mods out there that add new places/buildings without causing instability. Thanks in advance for any advice you guys can give...
blitzen
I've always had problems with mods that add new structures, such as player houses, dungeons, new villages, etc. I can only have a few of them installed and active at one time. That's normal for Skyrim. Installing a mod with new structures will often cause a CTD on startup. This is usually fixed by coverting them from an .esp to an .esm, In theory, this problem was reduced by changes associated with patch 1.6, but it wasn't eliminated. And if you are running older mods that were not rebuilt with a newer CK version, they will likely still cause the same problems. The best test seems to be attempting to play through the Helgen starting scenario, as that seems to be very easily broken by new mods. If you can make it through that without anything odd happening, you should be in pretty good shape.

How exactly do I do that? Is there a utility available? I don't use Ck and have not learned it yet. Thanks!
blitzen
Wrye Bash can do it. There is an Esmify option if you right click on a line for a mod in the plugin list. It sets a flag saying that it's an .esm, but does not change the file extension. BOSS will issue a warning, but it's not a problem.

I got the game running noticeably more stable after deleting DETAILED CITIES and DETAILED OUTSKIRTS and replacing them with ENHANCED TOWNS AND VILLAGES collection of mods. Thought that tip might help others.
