thumbincubation
I've been watching tutorials and trying to teach myself how to do better normal maps, specifically the fancy ones with the specular maps integrated. Previously, if I wanted some parts shiny and some dull, for example, I'd have to outline everything with the lasso tool, invert selections back and forth, and change the opacity of the eraser. The latest method I've been learning about involves changing the levels, to make the darks darker and the lights lighter, to control shine. So far, I'm finding that useful sometimes, not other times, and in most cases I'm not able to get close enough to the vanilla look. So I'm wondering if there's some tab or something, in GIMP, which will tell me what settings were used to create the vanilla normal maps. (ie: 4 sample, 9x9, bump strength, etc.) Is there a standard, or were they mostly done "by eye" ?
