Air filled pockets or passages though water?

Is it possible to put pockets of air or passages through water features? I know the water planes extend down for the water effects, but I would like to create dry vertical and horizontal passages under the water plane that are not as far down as the bottom of the water plane effects.

Has anyone done something like this or can point me in the right direction?

By the way, Flipping a water plane does not cancel out the water effect of another water plane above it. Though a flipped plane by itself creates a very thin water effect where it does not extend up or down.

It would probably be best to have a trapdoor before the water feature, which leads to another cell containing just a tunnel or something. As far as I know, (and this is speaking mostly from my experience with Oblivion's CS) the water level is absolute.

Just thought of an idea; perhaps you could make a water filled tunnel, and then have the air pockets above the water plane, the tunnel extending above the water plane is outside the normal cave path or whatever. It would appear as though there are water pockets inside the water tunnel, yet under the main water feature? Just gently slope downwards and it won't be as noticeable.

Okay, I'm horrible at explanations. Sorry. =(

Would be nice to have a 'water lift' -- at the bottom of a shaft press a button which 'releases water' raising the water plane, so you can swim to an upper level.

Does anyone have this?

Haven't modded, so don't know if a water plane could be made in a small column (as I think Rustle32 would want), or if it's an 'infinite plane.

Could see if SKSE has a function for that. It seems like you would have to change the room settings, which seem pretty permanent (from the player's point of view).

It seems all water planes have the same finite depth. If I could change that depth to be shallower, then I could make my idea work. I want to have a staircase go down in the middle of a pool of water then a horizontal passage leading off of that. I expect I could edit a water mesh to have the hole for the circular stairway, but it is the part to not have the passageway flooded which is my sticking point. Using a separate cell would defeat the wow factor of having a staircase rise out of a pool of water.

One of the dwemer ruins uses a water type lift for when the room floods and the exit is at the top of the room, so the water lift is possible.

Wanted to mention there is a working animated object set in game that can be used as an elevator. The TrapNorPlatformStairs can move up and down the equivalent of 7 floors, It steps from -6 to 6 with each step being about half the height of a low ceilinged room. Though to have more than two stops will require changing the parameters via a script, the TrapNorPlatformStairs can be activated by a button or lever. The speed, delay and stopping heights are in the script properties. It also fits nicely into a NorRmShaft kit shaft.

My idea was to have one of these rise out of pool of water, having the water drain out using a separate water plane and some effects, and the lower exit of the stairs continue on without being filling with water. I suppose I could disable/enable the water plane at a certain point on the stairs, but I'm worried how it would affect NPCs that might be in the lower passage when it becomes an underwater environment.
