Blacksnake89
My most anticipated game of 2008 was released not long ago, I am talking about Mercs 2. I bought this game and just started playing it a week ago. The game has expanded little on the previous one but that's not a bad thing unless you hated the first. Some of the things that have changed is the destruction. It's more dynamic than the last game and even funner to watch a building collapse. The fire commponent added to the game is fun and useful. There was one point where a camp of rebels kept giving me a hard time and they where pretty heavily entrenched. They were also surrounded by many large trees and some prety lush vegitation so I decided to send a flaming car crashing into the forest. The final result was half the camp burned to the ground with little effort and many lols. Another system they added was a new resource, fuel. You no longer work for a PMC instead you run your own and since you're in the middle of a war for fuel you must provide it yourself. It can be annoying sometimes to have to keep an eye on both your cash and your fuel stocks but it's not the first game to use two resources. The addition of watercraft adds some new flare into the game aswell. Another addition is the abbility to steal your airstrikes. Unlike the last game you can get free airstrikes aside from the fuel cost of dropping them. However you can only find a few types of air strikes laying around and the ones you commonly find don't even seem worth buying with the amount of them you find. Although there's always that rare case when you find a MOAB or Fuel air bomb laying around collecting dust. The mercs themselves are a lot more alive than the last game especially Mattias the crazy swedish death machine. All of the mercs are voiced by talented voice actors such as Jennifer Hale, Phil LaMarr and Peter uh....*que crickes* Anyways he does a fantastic job on the voice. The mercs also have distinct playstyles. Chris Jacobs carries more ammo than the other mercs and seems to take hits at an intermediate level I have not played as Jacobs yet though but based on what I have seen he seems to be the medium difficulty of the game. Mattias is the though merc and is able to regenerate health faster and take more hits. He also becomes invulnerable for a very brief ammount of time right before dieing giving you time to make it to cover or go on a rampage and kill off the remaining hostiles. Mattias is a tank and is basically like playing on easy however I would suggest you play as him first because 90% of the games cutscenes seem to bee geared towards his personality. Finally there is Jennifer Mui she is the fast merc. Jen has the least health and regenerates much slower than the other however she is very acurate and moves much faster than the other mercs. Playing as Jen is like the games hard mode since she dies much quicker than the others. If you're good though Jen can live much longer in an intense firefight than the other two because she can avoid fire much easier. Of the 3 characters Jen's personality doesn't seem as humorous in fact many of her lines actually stopped my laughted cold. Well thats the good things about it now for the cons. One of the biggest downers I experianced was the lack of splitscrene co-op. My second biggest gripe is the accuracy of many of the guns found early on. Unlike most shooters your guns are not effected by recoil and the way this is implemented is BAD. You can take an M4 and put the dot from the hairs right on someones head standing no more than 20 feet from you and you shot will veer off to the right and miss your target by a good 3-4 feet. It's a cold day in hell when a sub works better at 80 feet than a rifle. This issue is "fixed" during the latter stages of the game when you get the chinese bullpup or american combat rifle however they have the acuracy you would expect the earlier weapons should have. My advice use the LMG or Micro SMG with your choice of either rocket launcher or sniper rifle for backup. Avoid pistols, the AK47, and the M4 like the plague. Another Glitch I found is while you are playing mattias if you grab 2 health packs while "berserk" you will become immortal and in place of dieing you are punished by having to endure through a rediculously long berserk state making the game either impossible or frusterating to play. It took 9 minutes for my screen to return to normal once and trust me immortality is not worth staying in the berserk state for 9 minutes To get rid of this save and reload your game, sometimes you may need to reset the Xbox. A glitch I have never encountered but a friend warned me about is this. If you try to jack a tank at the exact moment it fires its main cannon your game will wig out for a second then completely freeze. Another glitch I found is that sometimes you wont be allowed to zoom with yur sniper rifle or your binocs instead the screen wil just blur as if you zoomed. I have no idea what causes this glitch yet but thanks to it happening about every 30 minutes I am a really good shot when I no scope with the sniper rifle. This glitch seems to clear itself up most of the time if you die it will clear out. I believe this glitch has something to do with using a zoom while in the "injured" state or Berserk state if you're mattias. I am also a bit dissapointed with the length of the game. if you shot through the game hitting only the missions you absolutly have to you could clear the game in 6 hours easy. Flaws and all I give this game a solid 8/10 for delivering a visual performance of destruction unlike any game I have played before and a solid if not humorous storyline The main enemy shot you in the ass so you decided to wage war with his entire country. This best suits Mattias unstable mind, my person favorite quote from him after the shot in the ass scene is "Alot of people are going to die." If you played and enjoyed the first game go out and buy this if you haven't played the first give this game a shot. It's like if you took the destruction from battlefield bad company and added it to GTA.Edit: I caught a few spelling and gramatical errors but it's late..err early and I need some sleep so I know there will be more. Cut me some slack I'll fix them when I wake up later today. Well tata for now
WrathOfDeadguy
I've been looking forward to Mercs 2 for a while, but the sheer number of bug reports has me a little wary. I was going to get the 360 version, but I don't know if I want to spend my money on an as-is product that- in all likelihood- won't be properly patched. I think that I might wait and see if the PC version is as buggy, and if it gets patched later (either officially or unofficially). If the bugs stay- which, knowing EA, they probably will- I won't be buying Mercs 2 until the price comes way, way down... many of the bugs described would be real game-breakers for me, and I can't justify putting down $60 for an incomplete product. It's a shame, really, but there is no excuse for releasing a game that by all rights should have still been in Beta.
Palpenious
You are probably better off waiting, either for a price drop, or some sort of fix. It is disappointing, but I loved the first so much, somehow I'm able to overlook most of the bugs. I really thought the days of sequels being half as good as the originals was out, fortunately, I think (hope) this is an exception. Have to wait for Fable 2 to be sure. Knock on wood. I liked how Pandemic had a 4 day period where you could play with the games creaters. I was lucky and got to play with Peter Stormare the voice of Mattias Nilsson. No surprise he played as Mattias and he even did the voice I thought it was pretty cool.
MnorJium
if you say it's about as good as the first one... the first one was terrible so... I hope not.The first one had a good idea but it was put forth terribly. It seemed more like a blueprint than an actual game to me... not worth playing for long... but I hope you can SWIM in this one? Also I've heard the map takes up the entire SIZE of Venezuela?????? That's just a rumor I heard, I dont think its true, but if it were it would explain the glitches. Also, I heard the PC version controls sucked. Is is true? If so, can this be solved just by getting one of those imitation PS controllers for the PC or something like that? It might be cool for the PC because then it could have serious mods and/ or bug fixations.
