Ummm....tad misapplication of funds? I mean, why? really. Lets say the whole thing is a resounding success and this dark energy and dark matter

(which supposedly makes up 96% of the universe...(err, why can't you find it then??), the other 4% is galaxies, stars, planets and gas (and how you know that? You've measured it all ya?)) is found/created, then what? Cost of living will go down? War is over? Oil costs down? Everybody switches over to electric cars? Cancer is cured? Global warming reverses?

I'm just a hobby scientist, so I cannot give exact answers:

You propably know the theory that the universe is still expanding(yes, it's space is limited, if you could stop time and where able to disable Einstein's "Lightspeed is the ultimate speed" theory, you could measure it's size{even though it would be, well strange...}) and cooling down. The problem which cannot be explained is the 2nd theory that the expansion is speeding up, which means that the universe(if it is a universe, it might also be a multiverse^^) is growing wider and thinner. Since there's no logical explanation for this, Scientist "invented" the theory of dark energy(and Dark means that it is invisible to us since light does not affect it in any way) which functions as an accelerator.

Dark matter is matter which is also invisible. Planets, comets, stars, etc, etc are "Light Matter" since they are visible. Dark matter is an excuse to explain several issues which are again not explainable with our current physical laws(but I have to admit that I do not know much about it either, if I remember right, several issues concerning gravity are the cause for dark matter. So a ray of light which all of a sudden goes another direction without any expanation got distracted by dark matter. Again, I'm not sure if I'm right on that one, I just know that it is definitly not the matter of a neutron star).

The Scientist do not know that, they think that it's right. 90%, if not even 99,99% of everything we know is actually based on or just a theory.

In your post, I guess you were referring to the LHC experiment by CERN, it's main purpose is to find a new element which will explain(or create another theory, lol) the relationship of particles(their "gravity" in particullar) and finally a proof for quarks.

All previous particle accelerator projects also led to spin-offs, other inventions for medical treatment and other things. The results will not at all solve all problems humans have(a solution to all you mentioned is to eradicate mankind... As long as we live, we will always have those kind of problems, may it be those you mentioned or others).

The investments into the LHC are a necessity. The results may create new paths for future technology(as mentioned in another post, sorry forgot which one) and maybe give mankind the possibility to leave Earth before our sun will vaporize it in 5 billion years. Also, if we would always try to find a solution for our current problem 1st, we would propably still think how to make writing easier on a stone plate^^.
