Oblivion now crashing with or without mods being active

Hello, everyone.

I'm having a bit of trouble getting Oblivion to run as I would like it to. I've been testing out various mods and have been very pleased with the results in most cases, so much so that I don't really want to play through the game again without at least some modifications (this isn't my first run through).

Anyway, I reinstalled Oblivion just yesterday and began perusing for mods--mostly off the TES site. After the first evening, some mods had apparently made my game impossible to execute, though I have no idea which ones. I'm using obmm and tried deactivating each mod separately, but, for whatever reason, even when disabled, the game would no longer function. I can get to the main menu, but I get an error whenever I try to load a game or start a new one.

This time around I had the game running fine with several mods up until my last batch. I say batch because I essentially installed a handful of mods since the last time I was successful in making the game work. So, my assumption is that one of these last few mods must be the culprit (at least this time).

What annoys me most, though, is that the game will no longer let me load or start a new game at all, even with no mods switched on. My assumption is that one of the mods modified something that must have been essential for the game to run properly. This happened to me last night as well, and I had to remove everything and completely reinstall to fix the problem.

That being said, I'm wondering if one of you more knowledgeable folks would be willing to take a look at my suspect mod list and maybe give me some advice as to which one is likely causing the problem.

Here's my list of "potentially problematic" mods:

1. Kobus Char Advancement System + KCAS omod conversion

2. Illumination Within

3. No Psychic Guards

4. Francesco's Leveled Creatures Mod

5. Amazing Jump

6. DMC Stylish 2.0 Full

7. Sephs True Acrobatics

Here is the full list of mods I had active the last time my game worked properly:

1. Oblivion Official Patch

2. Oblivion Unofficial Patch

3. OBSE

4. Companion - Gabrielle

5. Elves of Lineage II

6. Alive Waters

7. Real Lava

8. Armamentarium Complete

9. Ren's Beauty Pack

10. Dual Wield Complete

11. Idles Poses Complete (which never seemed to work, but wouldn't stop me from loading anything)

I'm going to reinstall Oblivion and mess around a bit more. But, if anyone could give me a little insight as to what I did wrong, it might help prevent similar missteps on my part in the future. I should note that I'm following installation instructions to the letter with every mod I install, so I don't think it has anything to do with errors on that end.

Cheers,

elmatus

After messing with my settings a bit, it looks like Kobu's Char Advancement System is the problem. I'm not sure what other mod it's conflicting with, though. I figured it might be Francesco's, but obmm was showing conflicts with Kobu long before I got to trying Francesco's in combination with it. In fact, obmm was registering conflicts when I had only a couple other mods active, none of them related to the same things as Kobu's from what I can tell.

Anyway, I'll just take Kobu's out of the equation and likely stay away from mods that affect char advancement for now.

OBMM is horrible at detecting conflicts. I never trust it. If a mod sneezes at the same time another mod does you'll have a conflict (take the UOP for example, it's FILLED with conflicts... but it's supposed to be like that)

But, in the future if a mod starts messing up (ALWAYS test your game after each mod you install, don't download five and install them all at once, install one by one and test between each one) disable all the mods you suspect are causing the problems, make sure the game runs, then enable them one by one until you find the culprit. From there, check the readme to see if they mention potential conflicts, blah blah blah, maybe do a quick online search about it.

Yeah, I'm beginning to realise that as I go on.

I now have a new problem, not so dissimilar to the last one. Essentially, I've been able to run through the starting plot sequence with all the mods mentioned in the lists above except Kobu's, but whenever I try to exit the sewers into the main game world, the game crashes. I'm not entirely sure what would cause a game to crash at this point. The loading screens within the caves and dungeon area of the starting plot gave me no trouble, but the main game world doesn't seem to want to cooperate.

I tried removing the mods that would likely have a direct effect on the main game world, like the Alive Water one, but that didn't help anything.

Rather finicky piece of work, isn't it?

I have a few mods that do that. Sometimes you can disable them, run through the sewers, leave the sewers, save your game outside of the sewers, close the game, turn the mod back on, then start the game again. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, it just has something to do with the transition from the sewers into the game world for the first time, never knew why myself.

Anyway, try that and see if it helps.
