sinnerman69
I befriended the Soul Cairn dragon Durnehviir and he asked me to call him, so I did from outside the Soul Cairn and he never came and nothing happened I found this bit of info at gamefront.com Summon Durnehviir To Summon Durnehviir, you must first face the dragon on the top of the spires of the Soul Cairn. While on the Main Quests, at one point you’ll travel to the Soul Cairn to help Serana find an Elder Scroll. Once you’ve defeated Durnehviir, he will reappear as you exit to speak. Here, the dragon will teach you the Dragon Shout. It is key to unlocking another Dragon Shout called Soul Tear, with further instructions in the previous entry. This Dragon Shout will summon Durnehviir to fight by your side temporarily in battle. So I take it I'm supposed to call him from the stair portal that brought me into Soul Cairn? Edited August 3, 2012 by sinnerman69

Perraine
The journal entry is a bit confusing, and not very helpful, but ... To summon Durnehviir you use the "shout" he teaches you in the Soul Cairn, however, you MUST have your cursor pointing somewhere that a Dragon can land (i.e. on the ground) with enough space available. And be careful if you summon him to fight another Dragon out doors, as Durnehviir and the other dragon flew off somewhere one time on me and disappeared, and I couldn't find the damn skeleton anywhere! Also you CAN summon him underground (again if the space is big enough) and if he can't fly he'll summon undead minions from the Soul Cairn (11 all up at one point in a large bear cavern ... Lol) The Journal entry stating you need to learn the shout to summon Durnehviir is actually referring to the Soul Tear Shout words (yep, well done Bugthesda) And you must summon him 3 separate times (1 time for each word)
sinnerman69
I ended up going to the open lands outside whiterun and put cross hairs towards the ground and he appeared and I learned a shout from him and then I called him a second time and learned another shout from him!.. I watched a youtube walkthrough on how to get Durnehviir to appear and learn his shouts Edited August 11, 2012 by sinnerman69
Javalin
Pretty much what Perraine said.. - You don't need to be outside the Soul Cairn to gain the quest reward (for summoning 3 times) I found this a little odd..- You need to make sure he has enough room to "Land" - Strangely enough.. He doesn't begin flying around like Odahviing.- Can be cast within City Walls. But finding the space is a little weird.- He is totally invaluable fighting land or air foes.. much better than Odahviing. Combine this with Two Dremora Lords or Dragon Priests. sinnerman69
When I did the dragon ending killing alduin, that included Season Unending and then went to do dawnguard and already had the elder scroll dragon on me, and completed the soul cairn quests, dawnguard gave me the quest to get the elder scroll dragon scroll again, even they'll already completed Elder Knowledge: quest, so it might clog up your menu again if you did it before dawnguard!. I didn't have that issue, but I wonder if selling the scroll to Urag gro-Shub and then buying it back would be a workaround for that.
sinnerman69
I dropped it on the floor and then picked it up again, but that didn't work, but didn't go to the college, because I deleted my save game and already started a new game!..
