hi there again, i have a little problem again lol. Anyway its not a biggy ive just notices my memory in xp says its 3gb instead of 4. But in linux it shows all 4, whats going on, doe's xp support 4gb duel channel.

its nvidea sli memory clocked at 800mhz, it can be overclocked to 1066mhz.

what made me look is that as soon as i launched Oblivion, 3 minutes into the game it would crash.

well i figured out the crashing problem, but still doesn't show 4gb, its (stable) at the mement.

problem: needed more cooling, added a fan right where the memory is.

I did some googling several months back and found that only XP (or Vista) 64 bits can actually use all 4Gb.

XP 32 bits (called x86) uses only about 2.5 Gbs.

As far as I could follow (and remember) the details, there is a hard limit of 4Gb in the addressing mechanism of 32 bits OSs. But the OS uses part of the available addresses as a way to access other chips memories, so these addresses in real memory cannot be accessed and are not recognized by the OS.

(at the time, I decided to go XP x64 and I am not sure it was worth it)

well i guess ill have to upgrade to xp pro 64bit. Its funny, the only reason i kept xp pro 32bit is my creative extigy, i guess its time to upgrade to the creative xfire.

From my personal experience, in XP x64 you will miss a few things, but nothing serious.

In my case, a few tools I had don’t work and some programs fail to add their stuff to the right click menu in Windows Explorer (e.i, 7z)

Avast was the only antivirus program that explicitly said it supported x64 (as of last January)

And I am still frustrated with memory usage: sometimes it pages like crazy for no apparent reason (Task Manager graphs around 2.5 Gb) and I’ve never seen it using more that 3 Gb. (probably some fine tuning is in order, but I am not willing to waste the time)

All in all, didn’t lose much, didn’t gain much.

hah success, well i haven't yet upgraded to the 64bit edition yet, but i managed to tweak the timing a bit and managed to actually play Oblivion. I was suprised, the 3gb limit is still there but the ram uses those three chips to its max, still no 4gb yet :(.

im keeping the 32bit edition on a seperate drive and installing the 64bit edition on another drive, maybe my (10000rpm) sata western digital drive 75gb.

keeping the 32bit for work related and the 64bit edition for gaming.

well the opensuse was a get to know linux for my ps3, not very important, just for fun. Its on the 75gb hard drive.

If there is still a problem. Then it maybe one of the causes:

1. One of those sticks are not functioning properly

2. Wrong type of memory is inserted: DDR, DDR2, DDR3 etc.

no its not the memory, tested that in linux. I did a memory test as well, Just that xp 32bit has a cap at 3gb.

the memory works like a charm.

just upgraded today no problems at all, it needed a few updates though.
