Preferred combat strategies

Ha, how could I have forgotten about summoned creatures? That was a direct translation of my WoW warlock tactics. ^_^ I used the scamp and dremora mainly on my previous character. This time I skipped from the skeleton to the dremora, and already at level 5 the other NPCs are telling me I stink. So paralysis, summoned creatures, invisibility, and poisons are the unmodded mage's best friends!

If a horde of enemies are there, I hit and run, hit and run. If one on one, or one on 2, I hit, block, then hit twice, then block, always looking for openings.

It's not retreating or running away, it's tactical withdrawal, lol.

I've learned tons of strategies in playing a metric ton of strategy games. However, what works in one of those doesn't work as well here. In all of those, a mage is almost always a support character. One behind the lines lobbing spells at the enemy. The problem with Oblivion is enemies can close that distance way too fast, and most spells don't really do enough damage without modding it up. Sorry, that's just the way it is.

One mod I've looked into recently is Realistic Physics and Force. It works very well for the fighter character but I've yet to try the ones designed at magic. I'm guessing the force of magic spells drives them backwards or knocks them down at times, thus enabling you to get a couple more off at the enemy.

If you're not going to mod, I suggest developing your block and running backwards a lot.

If you're responding to my last comment, I think you misunderstand -- I wasn't speaking speculatively, I was saying that these strategies do work for me, and continue to work on this, my second character. Definitely don't settle for the stock spells you can buy in the game. As a mage, you should be making your own spells at Arcane University. An unarmoured mage can survive just fine without mods with well-designed custom spells and enchanted clothing (and some potions and poisons for support). At least that's the case with the difficulty slider set to 58%. Paralysis and invisibility make it so that you don't need to block or run backwards.

Well as a wussy little wood elf archer I tend to run backward and pump 'em full of arrows,

or jump up on a rock or ledge and do the same until their health is low enough that I feel

confident I can finish them with a sword.

I built up my acrobatics and sneak skills, and can tiptoe past just about anyone or thing.

Summoned creatures come in handy when under heavy stress also.

That was first time around. This time I plan on ramping things up a bit and will use some

mods that add difficulty and realism. i.e. - slower backward running (not brave enough for

"no backward running") and some of Duke Patricks enhancements such as alerting nearby

enemies, and duck and weave.

Also I've learned a bit from my first 300 hrs. so I want to get into the "art" of the slash and smash

this time.

I will probably get into the spell thing a bit more this time as well.

BTW - didn't finish the game first time so I could have something to look forward to....

Being on my 6th character for TES, I've managed to get quite an amount of mods. This character is a custom class, but basically is a combination between support magic user and an assassin. My only downfall is that I get raped when any destruction magic is used against me. Being with low strength, and low willpower, I basically try to do everything stealthy. If that fails, I use buffs to increase my strength, which will decrease my agility and speed drastically, and also a anti magic field which came with Midas Magic. Basically, if I mess up once, I'm gonna get pwnt badly :<

I started out as a breton battlemage under the lord birthsign.

I use a shield, sommend creature (skeleton hero, they don't cost much but last long, lateron i sommen a lich), heavy armor and a shortsword. So basicly I fight enemies with my sword, use alteration to shield me, restoration to heal me and run away when my magic is gone and i am nearly dead. I weare daedric armor (fully except the chorrel shield) and it's enchantend to maximize my magic. Fortifying skill has no effect anymore once you reace skill level 100, and resistance can be done with spell (make one spell that gives you X % resistance to all the elementel attacks, it's cheaper all in one). When you have enough mana, use it to heal your creature, ore wound your enemies with destruction. Alchemy can also help.

And make a fortify intelligence spell as soon as you can, that way you can almost double your amount of mana right before you go in the fight. And make sure you create your spell with an added 100% vurnebility to that element (the extra cost is almost nothing but the effect is significantly higher).

But my best friends are the staffs. Some do 80 damage! So everything gets blown away easily. And just keep Azura's star and you'll never have problems with recharging.

I played almost unmodded so far (just have the one where you can train 100 times, because i am level 50 and had only taken 20 training sessions so far, and the oblivion modular enhanced).

I play at 80%difficulty.

Heavy Armour, Short Blades (Daggers/ShortSword Transcendent Enchantment) and basically just circle them while attacking them.

Works a wonder if you're high athletics, speed and strength.
