Oblivion multiplayer?

I saw a youtube video of what was supposedly oblivion multiplayer.

But it was really jumpy and "player 2" didn't walk at all merely sort of hopped.

Don't know whether it was real or not though

Multites webpage was updated last time on August 2007, so I assume it didn't work

Oblivion Online has a main forum where actually nobody knows about playing Oblivion Online

And Shadowcran, well, I didn't find the webpage.

I think this is something that someone should really try to do (computer people).

I played once a game similar to Oblivion in gameplay (RPG mixed with a Shooter), and it was really great. Exploring places talking about what we saw, taking decisions about where to go or what to do, adds so much to the reality. After all we are a social species.

The mod most people have seen is an actual multiplayer mod, but the animations etc. are blocky since the connections aren't synchronized=animations aren't synchronized. Another problem with playing Oblivion online is that we'd need a online database with everysingle mesh and texture ever made for oblivion from which everyone playing on the server would get the necessary textures/meshes loaded, so they wouldn't get the 'WTF MISSING MESH' signs or purple textures all over the place.

Another more realistic view of this happening would be making the server have a set amount of mods running, without the player being able to effect what will be available. This only to prevent people running around with heavily 'customized' armors.(Being practically immortal.) However, people usually want their specific mods available and thus this might not get very popular, also every single mod that was running on the server would have to be balanced to a static levelled list of mobs(Basically diving the game into an area of 'easy mobs', 'medium mobs' and 'hard mobs' with static spawns.), to prevent lowbies from getting murdered by high level mobs and/or having access to gear that could easily make their game too easy.

There are simply too many factors that would have to be taken into consideration if a modder ever tried to >successfully< turn oblivion into an online game. What I personally consider possible would be a LAN type multiplayer with 2-4 players, possibly all family members, so the mods list everyone had would be quite similar, pref. identical, and easy to share so no one would have errors, purple objects or WTF signs all over their screen.

Yeah I see, and you are right.

I was thinking in what you are suggesting though. A network game, that you could play with only a couple of people, not necessarily needing a server. Using a program similar to Hamichi, may be.

I don't know, I'm not a programmer, I do know it would be a totally different Oblivion experience.

The game I played (very different in format, but similar in gameplay to Oblivion) was Freelancer, I enjoied it as single player, and then later it was almost a different game on multiplayer, as good as single.

Synchronization of the network and animations is one of the things I see as the biggest challenge. If we have any modder with enough skill at programming and friends/family who play oblivion, or just several computer lying around, it could be possible to do when the computers are directly linked to eachother, with a little effort to the synchro. The connection speeds between computers at a LAN should be rather fast,(I've got a 0.1ms latency when connecting to my lil bro's comp. This doesn't mean however that synchro adjustments wouldn't be needed, it'd only be a lesser of a problem.) which would make just getting the program work as the biggest issue, afterwards all that would be left to do is add the options for a 'host' pc that would be running all the configurations needed, like changing the wait/rest/dungeon reset times. Something similar to AoC in terms of how the day time/night time worked on the tutorial island might work, but it'd naturally need adjustments.

Honestly speaking I don't see a change this big coming anytime in the near future, one can always dream though.
