duude98
hi, as of a few weeks ago, i have celebrated my first working skyrim mod. it is nothing to be proud of, considering the amazing things the skyrim modding community here has done, but i am proud of it none the less. recently, however, i have thought of a way to make it better, but would require stepping into a grey area, so lighten something up for me: is it considered "porting" (which is considered piracy and is against the rules of both the nexus and the steam workshop, mind you) to take sound bits from one game, and apply them to my mod? to be more specific, i made a mod that replaces Lydia with Tali from mass effect using some quarian armor that someone made (don't worry, i asked his permission if i could use it.), and i want to also replace Lydia's voice with Tali's. i do know that the answer is probably that yes, it would be porting, but my hope, though thin, is that because i would be cutting down and editing the sound files, that that would somehow make it ok. i just like the idea, and i wanted to make sure that i could not do this before i completely gave up hope on the idea. thank-you. DaedalusMachina
My feeling on this is yes, that is exactly porting. I don't think it matters if the subject matter was modified, it did source from a different game. Now, if you were to take all of Lydia's lines and put them through a synthesizer to somehow sound like it was coming from Tali's headgear, that would not only be righteously awesome, but perfectly legal. duude98
that was my thought too, thank you for clearing that up. also, thank you for that suggestion, i may well do that. know any good sound editors?
DaedalusMachina
There's a whole list of sound editors on this very forum. Down there where it says "Audio" under the "Software" Category.
gasti89
A freeware sound editor is Audacity. If you want something more professional, Fruity Loops Studio, Logic (only for Mac), Cubase. Their cost is huge btw. I'm a musician so i often use them for my recordings, but be aware that you'll spend around 2-3 weeks just to understand the interface/features of those programs ;) Edited August 10, 2012 by gasti89
