trouble finding the cause of repeatable ctd

my game runs fine in that it loads i can play till i do something.
im using alternate start (camping in the woods ) happens whether i head in to helgen the take ralof/hadvar to begin the main quest or not.
in riverwood i grab the iron book form TheAmazingWorldOfBikiniArmor.esp. when i open my inventory soon as i highlight it about to read it i crash directly to desktop... i don't thing his mod is where my trouble lies as i have been using it for about 2 months with no trouble. i have not updated or changed it since install
i figured it was MrissiTailOfTroubles.esp as i have not had the chance to play it at all it was the last mod i installed. there is a bunch of talk about ctd in the post section of the nexus page. so un installed it with no change tested with a new toon
over the next few days i have re installed and re cleaned all the most recent mods. testing with a new too one at a time still no change
i had an older version of ssedit so updated. then reinstall and cleaned the main dlc and those that loot calls dirty mods. tried to fide it with that in the conflict detector.
i have 2 mods in my mods that were numbered 43(skyrim) over 44 (skyrim se) fixed those
tried every thing i could think of with no change would be thankful for any help

The way you went about trying to get the game to work seems a bit random. It is hard to determine the cause if you didn't do troubleshooting in a controlled fashion.

 

Did you start a new game each time to test this repeatable CTD?

 

Did you make sure that nothing from any previous mods were left in your data folder when you reinstalled the game?

 

Have you tested the game without using any mods?

the original install was fresh no trace of skyrim on my pc . then re downloaded it with stream.

 

all the mods were installed with vortex. when ever i updated or un installed i removed both the data files and archive re downloaded if i was updating.. with trying to find my trouble i mostly just un installed and kept the archive tried it again with a new game no save.. with my most recent mods got rid of them completely tried with a new game. if i still had trouble i re downloaded it and tried it with it install a new ta see if maybe i had a corrupt download.. left most of the older installed just disabled figuring there safe as i been playing again for about 2 months now with no crashes at all till this.

 

 

i guess it is possible some files got left behind wile un installing things. as i am guilty of trusting vortex to dump the necessary files..

 

am i wrong in thinking as long as the esm/esp are gone only textures/meshes outside of a bsa in the data folder can affect the game? guess some scripts too could if called by the skyrim/dlc/other esm\esp's if the name was the same.. do you know if vortex is known for leaving orphan data?

 

have never really ever run the game un moded . but in this case wouldn't matter as it would fix things as my ctd only happens with a book added by a mod.. well after i have picked up that book all books will do it .. but before then i am able to read spell books the obsi and vivid weather books

Since you can't be sure which mod is causing the problem, and while the crash is consistent, the steps that led to it weren't, so the best bet now is try a vanilla game so you know for sure a mod is causing the issue.

 

Once you've established that your vanilla game is stable in Riverwood, reading any book (grab a bunch just to be safe,) you can make a save game there and start installing mods one at a time until your game crashes. Start with the mod that you think might be causing issues (ones that modify book meshes or textures - some textures do crash the game.) Remember that we are making an assumption that it is a book that causes the problem - this is not proven yet.

thanks yian for trying to help out. ya make sense, and im grateful ..

 

but found a work around got me back to crash free play. seems if i go with the vanilla start from alternate start the error never occurs lets me go about the game every thing working.. good enough for me.

 

so any one else reading this tread pleas ignore it i'm set till i get board again of skyrim
