Vortex Updating Animations (Please Help)

Recommended Posts

From what you have said, you have two games, Skyrim SE and Oblivion.

Do not deactivate the mods for one game to run the other. There is no point.

Go into Settings and turn off auto-run FNIS.

When you want to switch games, just click on a profile for that game.

Most important - watch a good video Tutorial. I like Gopher.

Search on Vortex Tutorial.

I didn't want to create a new topic for my question, so I'll post it here.

I'm using Vortex for some time now, everything runs great. But one thing isn't clear to me. For SSE I use FNIS. ANd I have the option to let Vortex auto-run FNIS after deployment. When I do this, it creates a "FNIS-Data.zip" file and deploys it. But when I run FNIS gen. tool via the shortcut in Vortex, I can update FNIS behavior files, but it won't generate/update the "FNIS-Data.zip" file. SO what's the deal with it now? Are we supposed to let it run automatically or will it work fine also, when ran manually? Also when I let it run automatically, it will always be stuck at "updatinganimations (FNIS)", even though the process is clearly finished. I have to abort it manually and, to be safe, restart Vortex. It's a little bit confusing.

I never let finis run automatically. It runs fine run manually after I deploy. Make sure the Dashboard shortcut points to the executable under the game directory - not the mod.

You have a FNIS mod which is always enabled.

The FNIS output (all the generated animations) go in a generated mod named FNIS Data - or something similar.

Each Profile has their own FNIS Data variant - make sure one - and one only - is enabled.

Thx!

What I mean is, that FNIS won't create a "FNIS-Data" output, when I run it from the shortcut. Instead it puts the updated behavior/animation files directly into the game directory. The shortcut is configured properly (points to the game directory)

OK - now you have got me.

I have a half dozen FNIS Data variants, differing in profile name.

I actually don't know how those were created - or how to create a new one.

They might have been generated by the FNIS extension when running FNIS automatically.

No quick answer here I am afraid.

Further testing: The FNIS Data mod is generated by running FNIS in Auto mode.

So run FNIS auto once per profile to get the FNIS Data mod. Then switch to manual... Always make sure the FNIS Data mod for that profile is enabled.

Any day we learn something is a good day. All comments subject to revision by anyone who knows more.

I see a problem there. When you look into the FNIS-Data file, you'll see that it includes exactly what FNIS is creating when you run it. I imagine that Vortex is creating this data file, because FNIS once had a problem being run as a hardlinked file (actually sitting outside the SSE folder). So Vortex somehow moved the related files just that FNIS could work properly and then saved these files into this FNIS-Data archive, which gets deployed afterwards. When I run FNIS manually, AFTER it ran automatically, the deployed files from the FNIS-Data archive will be overwritten (it will notify about files baing changed outside of Vortex). This means that FNIS does work properly, even when you execute it from the hardlinked file located in the SSE/Data/Tools/ folder, making the FNIS-Data archive obsolete.. (?). Just a theorie though. However, I've tested this, and FNIS as well as all patched animatio ns are working fine, even if you use FNIS manualla only.

The only reason you really need a separate data file is that the data is unique to a particular profile.

Unless you want to run FNIS every time you switch profiles (I don't) it can't just merge the changes back to the FNIS mod or leave them in the game directory.

In addition which - Vortex can only merge changes it knows about. FNIS creates new files in the game directory that don't exist in the FNIS mod.

Yes, that's why FNIS provides a specific patch for file redirection. Now it's fully clear to me :) Thx!

I don't use profiles, so I can use FNIS like I always did.
