UnholyShadow Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 I have dial-up for internet, so the connection is extremely slow, thus downloading large mods is difficult. I often start downloads to large mods when I go to sleep or go somewhere, and I'll come back and it will be like 98% done, but it disconnected. It is extremely annoying to be so close, but yet so far XD
tyreil829 Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 rarely i had that problem but i got broadband here so it doesn't bug me much but i feel sorry for you Sheppard
dezdimona Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 wow, that has to suck, thats why I went to broadband too!
UnholyShadow Posted September 21, 2008 Author Posted September 21, 2008 Where I live in Virginia there isn't that much interest in high speed internet so there is no cable internet, only satellite, and it costs a ton out here. Verizon said they were going to run some cables out here but so far they have not.
XG08Zero Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 I used to be in your situation too. I had dialup for a long long time. I highly highly highly recommend a 'Download Manager'. I don't know what I would have done without them in my dialup days. I haven't used one since I upgraded to DSL but in general they...- Make downloads a bit faster by breaking the file into downloaded segments- Allow most downloads to be paused and re-continued (this depends on the way you download from the site as well)- Even schedule downloads (when you go to sleep some can dial-up and connect and download what you specify on a schedule) Overall they were massively helpful for the first two reasons, especially being able to resume broken/incomplete downloads. I was able to download PC Game demo's (which are over 600MB these days) with a dial-up connection with a download manager. I can't remember the name of any good ones but they aren't too hard to find (there are many free download managers online). If you use Mozilla Firefox, there is a great plug-in that I used that integrated your download manager with your downloads from browsing with Firefox. short wikipedia summarization on download managershttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Download_manager
WoogieMonster Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Yes, it is a downer to live in a place that is reluctant to advance technologically with the rest of the world. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly people will say "duh just get broadband" without realizing that the service may not exist in your area and as if you'd be still using dial-up if you had the choice. Equally as annoying are companies (Verizon, BellSouth, AT&T, MCI) that are constantly making claims that they will "soon spread broadband to your area" just in an effort to get you to move to that company. Then of course they never do. I have internet via satellite and it is very expensive indeed, and despite what that chick says on t.v. it is nowhere near broadband speed, but it is considerably faster than dial-up... when it works. I feel your pain friend, I live in mississippi. There is not a doubt in my mind that my computer is the most hi-tech thing within 150 miles of where I live. EDIT: The Firefox plug-in that XG08Zero mentioned is called Download Statusbar. It lets you pause a download and will sometimes be able to resume a broken download.
UnholyShadow Posted September 21, 2008 Author Posted September 21, 2008 Thank you both for your support. Unfortunately, download managers do not work on the nexus unless you have a premium account, which I am thinking of getting. There actually is DSL in my area, but the fees from Verizon along with the fees from the local ISP are exorbitant. It costs about 100 dollars a month, and it isn't even that fast. I am disgusted by Verizon saying outright lies just to get customers. It is a sad thing indeed that a major corporation would stoop to such a level.

Varus Torvyn Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Before I switched over from dial-up to cable broadband, I used a program called the Proxyconn Accelerator. It helped a lot. They have a nationwide system of piggy-back servers, and they have features such as static webpages stored, and compression-decompression on-the-fly. You might want to give them a look-see. Maybe it's something you could use. Just make sure you click on the dial-up software if you decide to go with it. Link: Proxyconn Dial-Up Accelerator
