Ragnor Stormcloud
To edit the NIF's, you need 3D Studio Max. And that costs a few thousand dollars to buy. For the textures, you could probably use almost any drawing program. Except for .dds files. I don't know what you would use to edit them.
deadclown
hmmmm. what im trying to do is alter existing monsters and npc appearences to make new ones. i'm pretty sure that involves .nifs, at least to do the npcs. am i wrong?
Elrol
There are two programs that you need, Skinner and NifTexture I will try to explain how they both work. Skinner allows you to find a mesh(NIF) on the TES CD and change it's name and all it's textures names, which means you create a new item, then you can open the textures in paintshop, or any other photo editing program and alter the textures to make the object look different. Skinner has one little bug though, wherever you first open the prog, say it's on the desktop, then for it to work right you have to leave it there, so make sure it's where you want it before you open it ;) Also another thing, make a folder entitled 'Data Files' in the skinner folder. NIFTexture allows you to open up an NIF and assign new textures to it, with this you have to find a texture copy it rename it, put it in a folder, then make some new textures for it, and assign them to the NIF. Here's the link Skinner NIFTexture -The Raven-out

Zerotech
There are two programs that you need, Skinner and NifTexture I will try to explain how they both work. I have tried to follow your advice with both these progs to the point of installing skinner to the Morrowind folder so the files are placed straight where they should supposedly go (as it suggests in Skinners helpfile) I`ve re-opened the skinnered files in NIFtexture and they show the correct texture.bmps I`ve scoured them with NIFexplorer and the given teture file is mine. But flip and blast the damn stuff just wont look any different in the editor or in the game. I`m only trying something simple like converting the colour of Imperial chain Pauldron to a more bronze look so the suit Dragonscale better.SoA_M_ImperialChain_Pauldron_GND + UABecome0_Dragon_Bone_Pauldron_L + RWith BMPsTX_0_Dragon_Bone_Pauldron_001 + 2In TESCS I select the NIFs for My Armour and hey presto.....NothingSeems like it should work can you tell me why it doesn`t ? Zerotech
Ah the weekend`s gone by and no replies which is partly good because I`ve made the discovery of editing the body part nif as well when dealing with armour.OK finally I see some changes and crash on and make some greaves, boots and panties, BUT my upper arms seem to have disappeared from beneath my shiny new pauldrons.Any ideas where I`ve messed up now. AND When trying Imp St gauntlets I can`t seem to load my replacement for the imperial skins nif on which the body part relies without TESCS crashing. Can someone please help me with some armour reskinning tips.

Shakkara
Hmm while we are at it, can I edit the meshes with 3D max, or can I only create new ones to convert them to the format MW uses?
