ravayen
(A note to moderators, if this post is in the wrong place please let me know and move it....i saw the tutorials topic in this forum and thought this was in tht catergory in a way honest mistake if not ) Making a mod?Having probs with your mod?Need inspiration? Then please read maybe it will help maybe it will just give you something to read for the next 5 mins lol I recently wrote a small topic regarding mounted combat and its possible similarity to game caalled mount and blade and after thinking about it thought tht it needed expanding upon greatly so here goes :)When scouring the nexus for mods for my own game it occured to me that many modders and i mean absolutely no insult by this, tend to think about skyrim and 'Only skyrim' with maybe the exception of armour/weapon mods in short i wanted to say.... that inspiration for that new idle or animation, that problem you cant seem to solve or that script you cant get to work may already have been solved elsewhere....in another game...possibly by another modder in tht game....dont be afraid to look outside the box of skyrim or its community. I by no means and in absolutely no way endorse blatently stealing scripts etc from other games or modders but looking to them for inspiration/ideas isnt wrong. Armour mods take armour ideas from elsewhere all the time so my list here wont be for tht kind of thing but here is a few i hope give you ideas. 1)Almost a no brainer here..."The fallout" series i know i know many mods have been converted already but what about you modders adding guns to skyrim? fallout is basically the same game made by the same people on the same engine animations for guns etc are made for this :) there are many idle animations that cld be used in skyrim perhaps dialogue if Beth allow it, im sure you the reader can think of many more things now you think about it and thats what im trying to do here...set off chains of thought. 2)As i mentioned "mount and blade warband" my reason for this is that it has many sword anims, horse riding/mounted combat, npc/combat scripts, roaming bands/armies tht take over forts and castles etc etc much if not all of which is written in python im not sure but i heard somewhere tht skyrim was written in something almost identical "Papyrus" i believe. (correct me if im wrong on this though, im not a modder) 3)"Fable" ok maybe not the best for taking things from directly but ideas wise...marriage system, radiant quest ideas, new monster ideas, fishing for fun, and by god they like making jokes about chickens theres chickens in skyrim right...and skyrim needs some humour in my opinion...see even just thinking bout humour made me think to put some in skyrim..."chain of inspiration" :) 4)"The gothic series" yes many of us were dissapointed in the game itself and its many bugs but damned if some of the "ideas" in tht game weren't gd (lets try to forget arcania though)oh yeh and it had nord type people, castles, demons, smithing, mining, hunting, skinning, arena fights, swords, bows, open world, followers, ETC ETc Etc etc....lol 5)"The X Series/x3 rebirth/reunion....yes i did actually just name a ....space game....for skyrim? what the?...but look at it this way.....the way they tricked the player into thinking there was an actually economy going on was simply amazing, imagine the ships as npcs and the stations as merchants/chests, the trade station quietly and sneakily removing items from the game to keep trade going without you really noticing...see?.... inspiration from anywhere. 6)"The patrician series" again the economy ideas. 7)"Divinity ego draconis" damn where to start on this one lol, you could turn into a dragon....martin did tht in oblivion coz he was dragon born...so are you....theres a pet in divinity that you can upgrade with body parts, there is quest/story line ideas galore im just gonna stop on this one else ill never stop.. 8)"The dragon age series" we all know this game..for this i will just write whats on the origins box with my own comments in brackets coz, well you'll see....You are the grey warden (Dragonborn) one of the last of a legendary order of guardians (Blades, dragon bloodline, take ya pick). With the return of an ancient foe (Dragons) and the kingdom engulfed in civil war (Lmao), you have been chosen by fate (hehe) to unite the shattered lands (Guess what im gonna write..yup "skyrim") and slay the archdemon (Alduin) once and for all.Yeh so pretty much any idea from tht is gonna fit lol 9)"Overlord" suprised? im not.....ideas on how to easily give orders to multiple followers, humour again, pretty much a treasure trove of inspiration for evil play throughs...again i could go on. 10)"YOU DECIDE" I could go on like this forever especially if i think about things like world of warcraft but i think you are beginning to get my point, dont just look at this as a list of ideas from games or even a list of games think of these points as a starting block to a chain of thought....maybe someone else somewhere else had this same idea/fixed this problem/had tht script. a lot of other games have their own modding communities perhaps you even modded one and didnt make the link between that one and this try visiting them maybe they would help maybe they have free to use modders resources you could use i know we do on nexus.... So i put this out to you..have a game that might help this one? make a comment say why...does it use the same style or script language the same skeletal meshes or animation that would fit or is it just full of ideas maybe this topic will spawn a whole new generation of modding ideas....maybe no-one will read it lol....guess ill find out :) Just ask..What kind of mod am i making?Do any other games do roughly the same thing?Have i really looked "everywhere" for inspiration? What is in my pc game collection collecting dust? Are there really other modders outside of nexus and skyrim? or is that just a myth someone made up to make other games seem appealing?....beth once told me they designed a whole new game engine to eliminate all existing bugs and did they? really? they even told me a few years back they'd always be loyal to pc...coughs xbox...coughs dawnguard.. P.S.Thankyou to all skyrim modders who take the time to make my £39.99 spent in store so much more value for money even though we sometimes complain about bugs or say we prefer it a different way im sure all downloaders like me will agree when i say we salute you :) Edited August 14, 2012 by ravayen
