Megaton crater

Perhaps Chinese spies got hold of Vault 101's approximate location and bombs were dropped on the area where they thought it would be? Who knows, maybe Vault 101 actually does run under that location (That would explain why raiders appear to be digging into Vault 101 from a ridiculous distance away from it)?

Interesting point, which got me to thinking. Maybe they were trying for ONE of a number of accessways to that Vault.

Why would these Vaults have only ONE means of access? If there was a direct hit on that doorway (as happened in at least one instance), or if the tunnel merely collapsed for any of several dozen other reasons, or if the door mechanism simply broke down, then entering/leaving that Vault became more than a little difficult.

Surely it would make sense to maintain at least a couple of completely separate entryways for each Vault.

I don't think they tried for the vault using bombs like the one in Megaton. If you remember The Glow in Fallout 1 ( if you played F1, if not The Glow is an atomic-direct-hit busted vault) , the effect was different. What i mean is that it needs a missile to penetrate the soil and vault walls, not one that explodes on the surface.

On the other hand, a cave-in could be a probable cause for the crater.

What caused the Megaton Crater? Simply put, it wasn't an atomic bomb, there's no lingering radiation, not even at the beginning. It can't be a conventional bomb because the crater is too big. Do you know what that leads me to believe? It was caused by a cratering bomb. You see, there are special bombs that are designed (and have been since WWII) that crater runways, making them unusable for airplanes until the damage is repaired. Both this cratering bomb and the nuke missed the airport where the planes that built Megaton came from. But the cratering bomb, probably unintentionally, burst on ground impact. That itself wouldn't cause the hole. But what would? Well, a sinkhole could do it, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Nope: thing it hit a natural gas pocket or line and the whole thing went BOOM! The crater was created wholly by fortuitous conventional means, and that the bomb rolled in to the bottom is mere coincidence.

EDIT: In all fairness, the West Tek Facility was nuked repeatedly, and with designated radiological agents. That's why its the only consistently radioactive place in the Core region.

Good to see its been forever since you guys played the game.

Remember the old women living in the bus that everyone directs you to about the history of the town? She stats that the crater was made by a plane crash not a bomb.

Issue solved!

I am playing the game regularly, and Manya says no such thing. Dang sure, because TecVault is one of my favourite mods, and getting into that entails questioning her VERY closely.

She talks about people finding the bomb in the crater while they were sheltering there, and how Megaton's walls were built out of plane bits salvaged from a nearby "air station". But no plane crash features anywhere in her conversation.
