I was working on a mod and wanted a quick community poll of deceration vs function. would you rather see weapons and other objects as a stationary decrative object for look and effect, or the guns and objects as themselves as objects to pick up? please lemmie know what you think.

Generally I believe functionality trumps decorative purposes. Especially in the case of weapons. I would be dissapointed if I saw something cool in the distance and wouldn't be able to pick it up and use it when I got there.

Well, certainly it can. As I see it, objects that would be interactive in the real world (weapons, clutter objects etc.) should be made as such for a more immersive game experience. To elaborate on my previous post, I'm not against items put there for aesthetic purposes, but if it is an item that someone would reasonably want to interact with, it should be possible. Even if it's just a movable static, it improves my experience that I am able to interact with it by grabbing it. If it's put there for aesthetic purposes, but not an item that it would make sense to interact with such as tables, plants, rocks, paintings, fences, walls etc., then I'm fine with it being just a static object.

Edit: Of course, not every object in the game should be interactive. For example some of the mainframes and machinery found in vaults or laboratories would be operable in reality, but seing as operating them serves no purpose in regards to gameplay it would not make sense to make them interactive. Their purpose are purely aesthetic.

In this case I understand. There are other things that could be done, but it also requires a bit more work.

  • You could set ownership of the items to whoever or whatever faction owns the barracks, so the player would have to steal them. However, they would still be easily accessible if no one is around. Maybe there could be guards?
  • You could also, considering some of them are high level weapons, have them locked up but still visible. Perhaps use the prison door/bars to make a closed off area.
  • Another thing that comes to mind is what is done in the BoS bunker in the Mohave. There are a couple of weapons around that can't be picked up because they're broken. Static activators that show a message.

Personally I think these would create a more interesting environment, than a static that the player cannot interact with.

But in the end it depends on you, what kind of mod you're making and what you want the player to feel.

It's the roleplayer in me that wants everything in a game to be, in one way or another, interactive. But not all people have the same ideas about what constitutes a great game experience.
