Windows update taken to long to shut down

Recommended Posts

I did a system restore backup yesterday from July 2011 and it was successful, and I got my internet working first so I could do Windows update, there was 82 urgent updates to install and they installed, but now windows is taken over a hour to shut down after the updates!..

I already lost pateinces once with the shut down earlier on and pressed the power button to help the process along, but it just made thing's worse and 65 windows update failed, so after windows kicked into safe mode it started windows normally and I had to go back to windows update and those 65 updates that failed earlier on needed re-installing..

It's been a hour in a half now on the windows blue shutting down screen with the little spinning wheel beside the words Shutting Down in the meddle of the screen!..

Windows 7 Home Premium words is at the bottom meddle of the blue screen!..

how long should I allow Windows to continue shutting down? I know it's configuring install's and updates but this is ridiculous :ermm:

It was still at it this morning at 9:40 am, 8 hours to shut downn, I pressed the power button again and the windows update configuration failed message came up again!..

I think McAfee Security center is missing with the updates!..

update

I ended up stopping the windows update a third time and it's a good thing I did, I read that some windows updates get stuck in shutdown mode!..

I installed the updates in smaller bunches and one of them needed a different method from Microsoft, some microsoft fix it program to install it and then the rest installed ok in smaller amount was 2 at a time and then 4 batches a few times and then 5 batches a few times, just not all at once!..

once its all running fine and upto date use back up to create a system image on a external drive if poss or a dvd this can be a huge file depending on what you save and a valuable tool for such situations .

Generally when you have more than 20 urgent updates, you're usually best off doing them in sets based on date (starting with service packs). Don't let the automatic stuff do the thinking for you. When the urgent updates are done, then work on the minor ones related to other programs you use.
