Persuasion Not Working

I seem to keep coming back here - but everyone's so helpful!

The problem is this: Instead of being able to press the icon next to the exit-out of conversation icon, there's a knew conversation option: "Persuasion."

I clicked it a few times, but all it seems to do is make NPCs not like you for a while (like when persuading an NPC goes the wrong way.)

I'm not sure how it went wrong, nor how to fix it.

Does anyone know what's going on?

I'm not really clear as to what you are trying to fix. Your inability to "press the icon next to the exit-out of conversation icon" (I don't recall it), or how to use the 'Persuasion' option. But I think I can clear up the latter.

The 'Persuasion' button initiates the 'persuasion minigame', which is used to influence the disposition of NPCs towards your character. For merchants, this is mostly only temporary, good only for the current bargaining session, but for members of factions and other random NPCs it has longer effects. (Fame, Infamy, race, clothing, and faction membership also affect disposition.)

Once you enter the minigame, when you click the 'start' button, a timer is activated as you begin a new session. Every so many seconds the disposition drops automatically.

The challenge is to read the NPCs expression as you move your mouse over the different quadrants of the 'pie' to determine their response to that particular form of persuasion, quickly, and then click each quadrant when it is 'active' and filled with the most or least (depending upon the disposition result you desire) amount of persuasion.

There are four disposition results: happy (positive) and angry (negative), with a lessor version of each. (The disposition for each quadrant for a given NPC does not change from session to session in the same round of the minigame or even separate minigame rounds in the same visit, though I am not certain it remains constant between different visits to the NPC.) Tip: Watch their eyebrows and the corners of their mouths.

Each time you click in the 'active' quadrant, the 'filling' wheel rotates and a new quadrant becomes 'active' as well. You also can click the 'Rotate' button once per session to rotate the wheel without having it apply to the 'active' quadrant, in order to advance the filling to a more desirable result.

Determining which quadrant gives which result is the first important thing to determine each minigame, and deciding when to use the rotate button is the second. After that it's just patience.

There are mods designed to overhaul and eliminate the persuasion minigame, as some people hate it. Try searching the Nexus on 'persuasion'.
