Journey to the Centre of Hawkthorne

As someone who works in the TV industry and is an avid gamer (and modder), it's always interesting to see how the two mediums come together. Often, it's an unmitigated disaster, with the game produced turning out to be nothing more than a cheap and easy way to capitalize on the success of the series, but every once in a while, someone gets the recipe just right - and the result is a thing of beauty.

NBC's Community is hands-down one of the wittiest and most entertaining comedies on TV these days, so it comes as no surprise that someone out there put in the time and effort to produce a playable version of "Journey to the Center of Hawkthorne", the 16-bit game featured in the third season episode, Digital Estate Planning. The attention to detail is incredible; from the digitized version of Community's iconic theme song, to the hundred or so dialogue options available from Hilda, the blacksmith's daughter, it is clear that the author has put in countless hours of work to keep the game as close to the original as humanly possible.

Though the project is still in development, the file is available for download in its WIP state. Many of the areas seen in the show have already been built, as well as a beautifully rendered version of the Greendale campus. The game and website are frequently updated, so be sure to check back often to get the most recent version!

The file is available for download here.
