Ethre
I'll second the pinup girl. :) tats done in the 60's and early 70's are considered "old style" Are they supposed to be any different in design then?

gandalftw
'Michlo' Hmm, did I miss WW3? :P Hey,i'm using 57yo brain cells what da ya want from me? Ever hear of a brain fart? What did you mean by "old style tats" Gandalftw? Here's a fellow with some tats from the 40s. link My fathers were from the 40s,very thick outlines nothing like the single needle type today. They were simpler in design as well.He had an anchor,Betty Boop,Popeye,an Indian Chief, snake curled around a dagger,a rose with my mothers name, several skulls. His arms were pretty much covered. He had a back piece of a large skull with a snake coming out of one eye that one was very detailed,my half brother was a tattoo artist and he did that one. I don't have as many as he did.My designs are of a dark nature, grim reapers, creatures, death and destruction :verymad: ,that sort of thing.Mine were done when i was a young and angry fellow.I have mellowed with age yet i don't regret any of them. They remind me of who i was and from whence i came. Michlo
hehe, yes of course brain farts are allowed, Gandalf. I've just hit 40 and I've already been having them for a while! :) I know what you mean by the old style, I've seen them on my Uncle. I would second the vote against tribal, it really is very common these days. I go back to what I said earlier, try to design it yourself or find something that really speaks to you. You may also not want a big one at first (such as the tribal across your back you spoke of). No matter what anybody tells you, they DO hurt, especially across bone and there is some healing time. My first was my nick-name (Michlo) on my neck. Yup, pretty silly but I was influenced by the "home boys" I had come to know from the Mexican family I was helping out since being here in Los Angeles. Anyway, he did this whole curly lettering and I was sitting there thinking "well this isn't bad at all". My mate who has tattoos everywhere was watching me closely and was rather pissed off that I wasn't showing any emotion. Then the tattooist asked if he should draw a line underneath to finish it off. I thought "sure, why not?". He started the line, a bit lower than the letters I suppose and inside I was screaming something akin to "WHAT THE BLOODY HELL!??!!!!". It hurt like I couldn't believe. hehe. I still didn't show it, much to my mate's annoyance but anyway, where was I? oh, brain fart. So pick one out that speaks to you or design it from the heart, keep it for a while so you can really be sure and then just go for it. Good luck. Edit - I suppose I ought to mention the others. My second is something I came up with, it is a mix of the Aztec calendar and the eagle from the Mexican flag. That is on my right bicep. My third is a tribute to my Nan (Grandmother). It is just the word "Nan" with an ivy leaf below it as her name was Ivy. That is on my fore-arm as it is nothing I'll ever regret. My fourth is a copy of my baby Brother's from when he was in the Navy. It is the British flag with a British Bulldog in front of it and the word "England". That is on my left bicep. I have one more to get that will be a tribute to the Sister I lost two years ago August. I've been trying to think of what would be appropriate (plus it took me a while to get over it since I'm the eldest and you don't expect your siblings to go before you). I think it is going to have her name and something to do with the ocean as she loved it and I'm a scuba-diver. I'll try to post some pics of them soon. I hope some of that helps. Cheers.
