Basic questions; please be specific.

1. What Operating System are you running?

2. What version of Oblivion did you just install?

3. What update are you trying to apply?

1. Im using windows vista home premium.

2. Well, i just installed the game so it should be version 1.0 or whatever comes with the cd.

3. Im trying to install the latest version from "http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm"

They dosn't work from there, do i need to install any patches before i can install the latest?

Anyone else know a good site with patches?

I heard u need atleast version 1.1 for mods from a friend.

Thats the only reason im updating.

Actually most newer mods will need 1.2 now. There are different versions of oblivion sold in different regions of the world and they need specific patches. That is what I meant with wrong version. Vista is... a problem in itself, as i heard from many people. Personally I saw no reason to even touch it, so little help from me if some dragon lurks there, but one thing I can say for sure: You'll need to be logged into an account with administrative rights to change anything in the "program files" folder, which is what the patch attempts. The tricky thing is, that vista uses some kind of virtual folder replacement, so it may look like you're applying changes to said folder when in fact you're working on a virtual copy of it. Keep that in mind too. But from the error message you got I'm pretty convinced you downloaded the wrong file. If you can't figure which regional patch you need simply download them all and keep trying. Eventually one will work.

Wow, thats rough  I'll just have to try to get the right one then...

Hate the drawbacks with vista, well i'll just have to bite the lip and keep trying, thx for the help anyway

Edit:

Ha! Damn im slow... the right patch could be found lower on "http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads

/updates_patches.htm"... The one i had tried were not for my region (europe).

Well thx again
